L'étau (The Vice), Babel Fish version

How well can the Babel Fish translate Denis Jeambar's impassioned essay, "The Vice"? Let's find out!

[Subtitle]These revolts are a formidable means of intrusion of foreign crises from which control escapes to us

Nous savions. Et nous avons laissé faire. Nous savions. Tous.

We knew. And we let make. We knew. All. Without exception. We had known that we manufacture, for at least thirty years, a social nuclear bomb.

Bankruptcy of, the bankruptcy immigration policy of our town planning, bankruptcy of our school system, economic bankruptcy and, to finish, this civil war which settles in the cities and the suburbs, led by young French, yes, young French, who deny all the values of a country which made dream their parents and their grandparents.

There is, perhaps, in the heart of this rising, a maelstrom of leaders, organized bands, breakers and islamist radicals which draw some strings. In this climbing, they seek to reinforce their influence on zones of not-right, given up by the State, to reign there by the fear, to install the rules of a criminal economy there or to impose on it the laws of an Islamism extremist.

But to stick to an invisible hand is too easy. Because there is especially in these suburbs a human fallow, these "acivic" young people fault of having learned the respect from the authority, uncultivated fault of having followed a complete school course, without fault employment of having received a formation, immature fault of being educated.

This new interior proletariat, sometimes prostrate, sometimes recalcitrant, is worked, however, by two new ideas which make this revolt singular. Initially, these young people have the feeling finally to exist while revolting: the media offer the mirror to them which they never had. Then, a number of them believe that they live the same drama as an external proletariat, Arab, African, which launched out in a radical opposition to these countries known as of the North which fascinate them and reject them.

Thus we enter during one new time of hoop nets where the national tension is nourished of an endogenous and exogenic feeling of injustice which explodes the traditional executives. Our company is psychologically attacked inside and outside: the revolts which shake our suburbs are a formidable means of intrusion of foreign crises from which control escapes to us completely. The History shows it: civilizations always disaggregate under this double pressure.

[NB: A time of hoop nets? Exploding traditional executives?? What is this, Baghdad?]

It is for that that it is necessary for us to be lucid and not to satisfy us of a reflex of law and order, essential certainly, but insufficient. To calm these ghettos and to forget them until the next revolt would be a madness! It is imperative and urgent, here and now, to take again the hand in this human environment to prevent that it really does not pass under the cut of external influences.

We know and we can, even if it is very difficult in a world in full change, take up the challenge of poverty. We must resume this tireless economic and social work. We will not be able, on the other hand, to settle this question if hostile forces with our national identity impose their vision to these teenagers who estimate themselves, wrongly and rightly, abandoned.

For that, it is advisable to treat them like authentic French without letting itself trap by a speech on the multiculturalism, the difference or the ethnicity which do not regulate anything, quite to the contrary.

It is a challenge launched to the State, which must find its place in the suburbs. It is a challenge launched to all the French, who must break with too many prejudices. It is a challenge launched to these young people, who must accept their French citizenship with his rights and his duties. It is a challenge launched to their parents, who abdicated any authority. It is a challenge launched to the president of the Republic, person in charge for the interior harmony, which, in 1995, wrote (1): "the urgency, it is initially the situation of certain suburbs, where the rights are ridiculed, to start with the right to safety. It is not acceptable that in France, at the end of the XXe century, of true "favelas" form the compost of a saving in gangster type. Dedicated to the marginality because, in school situation of failure, the young people are the object of worst temptations. A permanent insecurity dissuades any economic initiative."

C'était il y a dix ans. Rien n'a changé.

It was ten years ago. Nothing changed.

[Kevin's comment: Overall, not too shabby. Aside from a couple egregious missteps, Babel Fish proved itself able to convey, more or less, the basic meaning of Jeambar's essay. Babel Fish isn't so good, however, when it comes to translating Korean. I have my own example of this from long ago, and Charles at Liminality has a more recent (and much better) example of the same phenomenon here.]
