(belated) Ave, Dr. Hodges!

As others have noted, Dr. Hodges has written a great post about al Qaeda and Islamism's religio-hegemonic motivations. The basic thrust of the post is that 9/11 and other terrorist actions are not best viewed as mere reactions to perceived Western encroachment or decadence, but are themselves the products of a highly motivated, proactive, theology-saturated ideology.

A random trip through my own archives turned up a link to an old Steven Den Beste article (2003) that also focuses on the religious dimensions of bin Laden's project. Den Beste's article, written partly in response to an article by Donald Sensing (of One Hand Clapping), contains an update with a link to Sensing's response.
