"True Detective": the binge-watch

I'm wasting my weekend by bingeing on Season 1 of HBO's "True Detective" series—the season starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. It's been pretty gripping thus far; I plan to write a review of the whole season once I'm done with it. Up to now, I see the show as primarily a character study and a format for the discussion of Big Ideas About Human Nature. I also think that its treatment of the murder that's driving the plot is far more intelligent than the nonsense we got from "Hannibal," which you'll recall I seriously disliked.

More on this show later.

Back when I lived part time in the USA I'd watch a lot of these premium channel television series. True Detective was one of my favorites. Glad you are enjoying it too.

I thought season one was brilliant; season two was slammed by viewers and some critics but personally, I enjoyed it as well. I'm not sure if season one set the bar too high, or if viewers were turned off by how different season two was from season one.

I've finished Season 1! Brilliant, fascinating, and a bit puzzling. I had heard that this season had "supernatural" elements in it, but I'm not sure what to make of what I saw. Looked like a wormhole; could've been one of Rust's hallucinations. I had been expecting the supernatural to express itself in a more obviously pagan manner, e.g., with the appearance of an actual Yellow King that might look a bit like the Greek god Pan or the Celtic Cernunnos.

By the way, I loved that one moment where Rust was going on about extradimensional realities "outside time." For a moment, we crossed over into "Interstellar" territory, and I had to recheck what I was watching.
