I had that problem when I was in Scotland. There are hats that have a brim in front and a fabric flap in back, though, and I think those might be better for backpacking; they do the job of protecting the back of your neck, but they don't get in the way of the pack.Charleshttp://www.liminality.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541500.post-73081035921690246682017-05-25T01:18:19.174+09:002017-05-25T01:18:19.174+09:00I already owned a 9,990 won heat gun bought at mom...I already owned a 9,990 won heat gun bought at mom and pop hardware store for removing tons and tons of dried glue gun glue used in putting up hagwon decorations over the years and a similarly priced small tool kit. As for the link and the hot plate, that guy is a pro, and I linked to him because because of how precise he is. But there's a short 3 - 4 minute one were the guy goes to town with a heat gun with 5 passes, and that's the one that gave me the confidence to try it myself. So far, I haven't screwed up removing and installing a single Samsung phone screen, but I can't say the same for a couple of LGs over the last few years (but they were too badly damaged in the first place and needed internal repairs as well). But the kids knew that I would do my best going in, and all they had to provide was a new glass screen.

My brother spends money like crazy on the latest and greatest new phones (he just got the S8), but I'm frugal and can't justify the expense when a S5 works well enough for me at the price of $129 with a free plan through Freedompop.com of 200 minutes, 500 texts, and 500mb of data per month (of course, unlimited calling, texts, and data on wi-fi). And certain times a year, they provide great discounts on their refurbished and used smart phones (3/14, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, and usually one day a month every month).John from Daejeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08431973044799010218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541500.post-85320699767937958662017-05-24T12:12:29.987+09:002017-05-24T12:12:29.987+09:00Watched the video. Seems to me that the money you "save" gets spent in other ways, e.g., by buying a hot plate ($172-$290 on Amazon for a science-lab plate, not a kitchen plate) or a heat-gun-plus-sensor combo (heat gun = $20-$200 on Amazon; sensor = $20-$40 for a reasonably priced one). No, thanks; I'd rather pay for the convenience of a ten-minute repair by a pro, although yeah, I do wish it had been cheaper.Kevin Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01328790917314282058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541500.post-89044961906211001592017-05-24T02:06:55.295+09:002017-05-24T02:06:55.295+09:00As my original S5 was a refurbished model, I only ...As my original S5 was a refurbished model, I only had $129 invested, so even if I screwed up royally in my attempt to repair the screen, I wouldn't be out a ton of money. And right now that $12 glass screen is down to less than $6 on Amazon and ebay. So, I watched a lot of youtube S5 screen replacement/repair videos and got to work with no distractions. It also helped that I've replaced a few different phone screens for my distraught students over the years, so I already owned a heat gun.

I think your repair shop took advantage of you and replaced the much more expensive LCD underneath the phone's screen and then the phone's screen because it is much, much easier than just replacing the broken glass screen, but it is much more expensive.

For an S5, this is the best replacement video that also explains about the LCD replacement under the glass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfJ2ap2pmgoJohn from Daejeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08431973044799010218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541500.post-47812214678937359202017-05-23T19:06:03.383+09:002017-05-23T19:06:03.383+09:00John,

Maybe you can become a Beta tester for them with free, or reduced cost, backpacks.

Also, I wish I would have said something earlier about your broken phone screen. I fixed my own S5 screen for a little over $12 thanks to Amazon and Youtube. As it no longer functions at its previous new phone level, I see I can get either a refurbished or used one for about $99 now that the S8 is out.John from Daejeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08431973044799010218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541500.post-74545228254068123942017-05-22T12:11:04.920+09:002017-05-22T12:11:04.920+09:00Brier,

I'd also like to redo the walk I just did in a "furrealz" kind of way (i.e., with no forced car ride that makes me skip a segment), but this time going from Incheon, the real beginning of the Gukto Jongju. From sea to shining sea, so to speak, even if it's just from the Seohae to the Namhae.

Whether I'll actually be able to take vacations like this one in the future is in some doubt, though. Korean corporations don't normally allow you a straight month off. This vacation came thanks to a private arrangement with the boss, who took into consideration the massive number of comp hours I had piled up during my Jan-Feb marathon, in which I worked 7-day weeks during both months, 8 or 9 weeks straight. So that's also part of my dilemma: to take such a vacation again, I'd need to do another work marathon.Kevin Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01328790917314282058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541500.post-80309679186422559352017-05-22T10:06:56.539+09:002017-05-22T10:06:56.539+09:00Congratulations on completing the walk!
