the Kathy Griffin flap
This pic has been making the rounds:
That's comedienne Kathy Griffin holding the beheaded-in-effigy noggin of Donald Trump. The image has apparently caused a titanic backlash, with people yammering about how it's in poor taste, and with others loudly declaring Griffin's image to be an actual threat against the life of the current president.
Personally, I find Kathy Griffin hilarious, and I don't see how any serious and/or sane person could ever construe her admittedly tasteless photo as an actual threat against President Trump. Griffin has apologized profusely since the backlash occurred (an interesting philosophical question is whether she would have apologized had there been no backlash), but it could be that the damage to her career has already been done.
I think Griffin was well within her free-speech rights to be photographed in this way, and I'd like to share whatever drugs the people who think Griffin is actually threatening the president are on. I should also note to any conservative readers that Griffin, while a flaming liberal herself, has spent much of her standup-comedy career skewering fellow liberals. She has been positively brutal, for example, in her mockery of Oprah Winfrey, a frequent target of her scorn. Griffin has, in many ways, been a living counterpoint to celebrities and their detached-from-reality lives. Go listen to some of her routines if you haven't already done so. Griffin, who is fully aware she's no beauty queen, has adopted the critical pose of the down-to-earth, dowdy Everywoman who shakes her head incredulously at the passing Hollywood scene, and she is utterly merciless when it comes to taking celebrities down several pegs. Because Griffin is a liberal, it's unsurprising to see her expressing ill will against Trump (although it wasn't long ago that Trump was himself a New York liberal—a fact that current liberals conveniently forget), and doing so in the extreme lefty manner that we've all become familiar with, especially since last year's election (none of this violent rhetoric is new: you'll also recall liberal jokes, and even films, about the fantasy assassination of George W. Bush).
The argument I'm hearing from the conservative side, though, has to do with hypocrisy: imagine if a rightie comedian had appeared in a photo holding the severed-in-effigy head of Barack Obama. The left would have been in a self-righteous uproar. This is true, of course: the left would indeed have been outraged, and I think conservatives are right to point out that leftist outrage is often selective (although interestingly, Chelsea Clinton has openly denounced Griffin's photo). That being said, the same standard applies, and in my opinion, the left would have had little to be outraged about had an Obama effigy appeared. It's just free expression, after all, and not a serious threat to the life of the president.
But rational discussion of issues like these seems to be beyond the mental capacity of many people these days. To sum up my position: Griffin's photo is plenty tasteless, but I don't seriously believe she's actually threatening President Trump. I disagree with much of Griffin's liberal platform, but personally find her to be a hilarious and talented standup comedienne who has performed a public service, over the years, by raking fellow celebrities over the coals in an effort to keep Hollywood humble.
I'm morbidly curious to see what becomes of Griffin now, after this incident. Some folks on the right believe this spells the end of her career, but I don't think so: such sentiments are mere wishful thinking. Griffin is bouncy and resilient, and I expect her to skewer herself, after this flap, just as hard as she's skewered her fellow celebrities.

Let me spoil it for you: not sincere at all. But you knew that already, didn't you? I doubt Griffin likes being in a position where she's obligated to apologize, so her video was, obviously, mostly pro forma.

I saw this over at the blog ROK Drop: "PRESIDENT MOON ORDERS INVESTIGATION OF WHY THAAD BATTERY WAS DEPLOYED WITH ALL OF ITS LAUNCHERS."
Apparently, newly minted South Korean president Moon Jae-in was aware that two THAAD launchers had been deployed in an agreed-upon location, but when another four launchers showed up basically unannounced, he pronounced himself "shocked" upon discovering the existence of the "extra" launchers. It turns out, however, that six is a standard complement of THAAD launchers. ROK Drop humorously notes that this fact is no secret, as the information is readily available on Wikipedia.
Moon looks like a clueless idiot for adopting a drama-queeny, "Why wasn't I notified? We must investigate this!" stance to this non-problem. Couple that with Moon's reflexively lefty desire to re-engage with North Korea in a Sunshine-y way, and you have to wonder whether the man has all his marbles. Is this the presidency we're in for? If so, God help us.

"Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2": review
[WARNING: SPOILERS.]
Long story short: I watched "Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2" (hereinafter "G2") a second time this past Sunday, so I guess I must have thought it was pretty damn good. The sequel doesn't quite rise to the level of the first movie, but that's mainly because there was simply no way to evoke the sheer novelty of the earlier film. Despite that slight deficit, I remain impressed by Marvel Studios' consistent quality in terms of direction, acting, cinematography, scripting, and character development. What the new "Guardians" lacks in plot, it definitely makes up for in character. The sequel continues to explore the basic themes of friendship and family (especially family), but despite having mostly the same cast, it is, in many respects, a very different film from the first one, thus making it hard to compare the two.
As other reviewers have noted, G2 has relatively few story beats. The movie is more interested in exploring relationships than in exploring the galaxy, although the revelation of Peter Quill's father's homeworld is marvelous to behold. Peter (Chris Pratt) learns that his father Ego (Kurt Russell) is a godlike being called a Celestial who has existed for millions of years, beginning life as a disembodied consciousness that, over the eons, learned to manipulate matter, thus forming a shell around itself that eventually became the "living planet" on which Peter stands. As a bonus divine power, Ego also learned how to incarnate himself in human form, making it possible for him to procreate in the standard humanoid way. Peter learns he has the Celestial genes himself, which is why he was able to hold an Infinity Stone in his hand (cf. the previous movie) and not die. He is effectively immortal as long as "the light" at the center of Ego's world continues to burn.
Only half the Guardians visit Ego's planet at first; the other half get involved in a subplot involving the Ravagers, including their exiled leader, the blue-skinned Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker in a hilarious, scene-stealing, and ultimately sentimental performance). Udonta is sent to capture the Guardians on behalf of Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), high priestess of the Sovereign, a race of genetically engineered and overly captious golden humanoids who consider slights against their honor to be a heresy punishable by death. When the Ravagers think Udonta has gone soft after capturing some of the Guardians, the space-buccaneers mutiny and throw Yondu in the Ravager brig along with Rocket (Bradley Cooper's voice, Sean Gunn's mo-cap body). Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) is taken by the Ravagers as a sort of mascot. Nebula (Karen Gillan), known as an adopted daughter of the evil and powerful Thanos (cf. the previous movie) and originally a prisoner of the Guardians, is allowed to remain free.
At this point, the movie takes a dark turn when we learn that Ego and his planet (which, as you'll recall from what I explained above, is also Ego) are not exactly what they appear to be. It's not that Ego has lied to Peter about his origins and cosmic desires: it's more that Ego has woven a skein of half-truths to ensnare Peter and compel his loyalty. And once Peter learns the true nature of Ego's relationship with Peter's mother Meredith as well as the real scope of Ego's ambitions... well, that's when all hell breaks loose.
Rounding out the cast are Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, and Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Thanos's other adopted daughter and Peter's love interest. We also get an applause-worthy cameo from Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord, the Ravager big cheese who has exiled Yondu Udonta for child-trafficking. Other recognizable faces are Michelle Yeoh as Aleta Ogord, Tommy Flanagan as Yondu loyalist Tullk, Ving Rhames as the giant Charlie-27, Sean Gunn as Yondu's henchman Kraglin, and Stan Lee, whose cameos in this film reveal him to be some sort of cosmic entity who has been quietly watching, and occasionally participating in, superhero-related events for years. G2 is written and directed by James Gunn, who wrote and directed the first movie as well.
The soundtrack to G2 is a continuing homage to the pop music of the 1970s, with some songs having more thematic significance than others. Two such songs are "Brandy, You're a Fine Girl" by Looking Glass; and "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac. In a sense, these songs are saying opposite things, as "The Chain" is used in the movie to symbolize the bonds of love and family, whereas "Brandy" is used to symbolize a wandering heart with no settled loyalties. When Peter, Drax, and Gamora arrive on Ego's awe-inspiring, phantasmagorical planet, we hear George Harrison's 1970 "My Sweet Lord," which seems apropos when you're meeting a god and entering his realm. The music for the ending credits is pure disco, straddling the late 70s and early 80s, and reminding us of nothing so much as the disco version of John Williams's "Star Wars" theme. Along with the 70s homage, though, there are visual homages to 1980s video-game culture. First, when Rocket steals some super-powerful batteries from the easily angered Sovereign, they send out their remote-piloted fighter-drones to pursue Peter Quill's ship, the Milano. The Sovereign pilots, headquartered on their home planet, sit inside control pods that hilariously emit sounds recognizable to anyone who has ever stepped into a 1980s video-game arcade. Later on, when Peter Quill has summoned his own godlike powers to combat his father (being half-Celestial, Peter has learned to tap into the living planet's energy, which he can channel for as long as the planet exists), he creates a gigantic Pac Man, complete with "waka-waka" sounds.

Peter's relationship with his father is front and center, but the story also spends time with sisters Gamora and Nebula, two abused girls who fear and hate their adoptive father, Thanos. Her main purpose on Ego's world is to help Ego get to sleep.* Drax claims that Mantis is horrifically ugly, but by the end of the movie, we can see there's the possibility of a relationship there. And while Yondu's relationship with Peter arguably informs the entire movie—even though Yondu and Peter barely interact for most of the film—Yondu also develops an interesting relationship with Rocket that begins while they're both locked in the Ravager brig and continues when they go off to rescue Peter, et al., from Ego's clutches.
Let's talk about the actors' performances for a bit. Chris Pratt remains his cheerfully goofy self as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord. Zoe Saldana does solid work as Gamora, striking the right balance between being a steely veteran of many battles and having a soft spot for Peter while also playing Mom to Baby Groot. Bradley Cooper's voice work for Rocket the enhanced raccoon hits all the right notes, including some pathos that comes out in the final third of the film. Pom Klementieff, who is French but of Russian-Korean extraction, manages to inject a comic note of Asian weirdness into the proceedings. Her character is essentially naive, having been raised exclusively by Ego as a sort of handmaiden/pet whose function seems to be primarily medicinal or therapeutic. By interacting with the other Guardians, Mantis begins to blossom socially; her arc goes from diffidence and timidity to something approaching independence and self-confidence. Sean Gunn, the director's brother, does double work as henchman Kraglin and as Rocket's body (he did the latter while wearing a motion-capture suit, Gollum-style). Though a minor character, Kraglin brings a good bit of comic relief to the table. Dave Bautista's Drax is still funny, but I think the story has him belly-laughing a bit too often for my taste. In the first film, when Drax laughed, it was because he knew he was about to die, and he was ready to join his murdered wife and daughter in the land of the dead. In this movie, Drax has loosened up and developed an almost bubbly sense of humor that seems at odds with his former self. I don't blame Bautista for that issue, but I do blame the writers for how they developed the character. Kurt Russell, meanwhile, is the perfect choice to play Ego; as the character says, he's got "rugged good looks," which makes him a convincing father for Peter, and his transition from benevolent parent to violent, greedy monster is smooth and professional. For my money, though, the absolute stand-out performance in the film comes from Michael Rooker as Yondu, the blue-skinned, snaggle-toothed Centaurian. The first film establishes that Yondu has long had a soft spot for Peter Quill, and that he's been a stern, sometimes abusive father-figure to the lad over the years. One issue that the new movie explores is who, exactly, Peter Quill's true father is, and in the end, Yondu tells Peter, regarding Ego: "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy." That's a powerful moment. (And the "Mary Poppins" moment, not long before, is a gut-buster.)
The thing that truly fascinated me about G2, though, was the theological angle. This movie, unlike the previous one, focuses on what it's like for mere mortals to meet a god—or the next closest thing to one. Ego's name is fitting, given his mission in life, which is to turn the universe into himself. He has a lot in common with Agent Smith in "The Matrix," who filled the Matrix with so many copies of himself that no one else was left. Note, too, that religiously speaking, the noble ideal is to turn away from the self toward ultimate reality. Turning toward the self, inflating the ego (or Ego, in this case), is always associated, in religion, with a demonic nature. This is who Ego turns out to be, ultimately: a self-obsessed creature who is more demon than god. His planet's beauties are, in the end, just so much hypnotic artifice, and like the planet he created, Ego is shown to be a spiritually hollow being with no patience for mortals and the exigencies of mortality. The true horror of Ego is revealed when he casually confesses how and why his relationship with Meredith Quill ended. At that point, Peter's choice between living life as an immortal Celestial and living life as a regular mortal becomes perfectly clear.
Despite how fascinating the theological angle was, though, I saw at least two problems with Ego. First, the story he tells Peter when they first reach Ego's planet doesn't quite add up. Ego tells Peter that, while he was still alone in the cosmos, he imagined what biological life must be like, then began to fashion a body for himself that matched his vision of such life. That vision somehow just happened to be human. I have to wonder how Ego, even with his godlike intelligence, was able to guess so exactly what human life would look and be like, down to the chromosomal level. It would have made more sense, story-wise, for Ego to have assumed some other form, then to have created a human form for himself after stumbling upon humanity. My second problem with Ego is that he proved disappointingly easy to kill. A bomb at his core—really? After millions of years of self-evolution and matter-manipulation, Ego—who was supposedly a Celestial—was somehow unready for a "Star Wars"-style attack to his core? I find this hard to believe, and I have to wonder whether Ego is really dead. I suspect that, like Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen, Ego has the power to reassemble and reconstitute himself no matter how severe the insult to the mortal aspects of his being. But that's only a guess. I have no idea what James Gunn has in store for Peter's and/or Ego's future. With Ego apparently gone, Peter now appears to be a mere mortal. He still possesses Celestial genes (trivia: Ego is not a Celestial in the comics, nor is he Peter's father), and that has to mean something, even if Ego's destruction has rendered those genes dormant.
In all, G2 is a well-crafted audiovisual treat. The story, such as it is, moves along at a healthy clip and deals both humorously and seriously with important issues like friendship, family, mortality, and apparent immortality. The film was good enough for me to want to see it twice, and I'm sure I'll be snapping it up once it's available on video. If you haven't seen it in theaters yet, go catch it before it disappears from the big screen forever.

Later on, when Peter Quill has summoned his own godlike powers to combat his father (being half-Celestial, Peter has learned to tap into the living planet's energy, which he can channel for as long as the planet exists), he creates a gigantic Pac Man, complete with "waka-waka" sounds.
As I mentioned above, G2 explores relationships. Peter's relationship with his father is front and center, but the story also spends time with sisters Gamora and Nebula, two abused girls who fear and hate their adoptive father, Thanos. The movie could have taken the sappy route and had the sisters kiss and make up after a huge fight, but writer James Gunn took the more mature tack and ended that plot line on a prickly note that was truer to the battle-hardened nature of these two women. Another relationship, mined more for its comic potential but hinting at the possibility of something deeper, is that of Drax and Mantis. Mantis is a large-eyed humanoid who has empathic powers that allow her both to feel others' emotions and, to some degree, intensify or abate them. Her main purpose on Ego's world is to help Ego get to sleep.* Drax claims that Mantis is horrifically ugly, but by the end of the movie, we can see there's the possibility of a relationship there. And while Yondu's relationship with Peter arguably informs the entire movie—even though Yondu and Peter barely interact for most of the film—Yondu also develops an interesting relationship with Rocket that begins while they're both locked in the Ravager brig and continues when they go off to rescue Peter, et al., from Ego's clutches.
Let's talk about the actors' performances for a bit. Chris Pratt remains his cheerfully goofy self as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord. Zoe Saldana does solid work as Gamora, striking the right balance between being a steely veteran of many battles and having a soft spot for Peter while also playing Mom to Baby Groot. Bradley Cooper's voice work for Rocket the enhanced raccoon hits all the right notes, including some pathos that comes out in the final third of the film. Pom Klementieff, who is French but of Russian-Korean extraction, manages to inject a comic note of Asian weirdness into the proceedings. Her character is essentially naive, having been raised exclusively by Ego as a sort of handmaiden/pet whose function seems to be primarily medicinal or therapeutic. By interacting with the other Guardians, Mantis begins to blossom socially; her arc goes from diffidence and timidity to something approaching independence and self-confidence. Sean Gunn, the director's brother, does double work as henchman Kraglin and as Rocket's body (he did the latter while wearing a motion-capture suit, Gollum-style). Though a minor character, Kraglin brings a good bit of comic relief to the table. Dave Bautista's Drax is still funny, but I think the story has him belly-laughing a bit too often for my taste. In the first film, when Drax laughed, it was because he knew he was about to die, and he was ready to join his murdered wife and daughter in the land of the dead. In this movie, Drax has loosened up and developed an almost bubbly sense of humor that seems at odds with his former self. I don't blame Bautista for that issue, but I do blame the writers for how they developed the character. Kurt Russell, meanwhile, is the perfect choice to play Ego; as the character says, he's got "rugged good looks," which makes him a convincing father for Peter, and his transition from benevolent parent to violent, greedy monster is smooth and professional. For my money, though, the absolute stand-out performance in the film comes from Michael Rooker as Yondu, the blue-skinned, snaggle-toothed Centaurian. The first film establishes that Yondu has long had a soft spot for Peter Quill, and that he's been a stern, sometimes abusive father-figure to the lad over the years. One issue that the new movie explores is who, exactly, Peter Quill's true father is, and in the end, Yondu tells Peter, regarding Ego: "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy." That's a powerful moment. (And the "Mary Poppins" moment, not long before, is a gut-buster.)
The thing that truly fascinated me about G2, though, was the theological angle. This movie, unlike the previous one, focuses on what it's like for mere mortals to meet a god—or the next closest thing to one. Ego's name is fitting, given his mission in life, which is to turn the universe into himself. He has a lot in common with Agent Smith in "The Matrix," who filled the Matrix with so many copies of himself that no one else was left. Note, too, that religiously speaking, the noble ideal is to turn away from the self toward ultimate reality. Turning toward the self, inflating the ego (or Ego, in this case), is always associated, in religion, with a demonic nature. This is who Ego turns out to be, ultimately: a self-obsessed creature who is more demon than god. His planet's beauties are, in the end, just so much hypnotic artifice, and like the planet he created, Ego is shown to be a spiritually hollow being with no patience for mortals and the exigencies of mortality. The true horror of Ego is revealed when he casually confesses how and why his relationship with Meredith Quill ended. At that point, Peter's choice between living life as an immortal Celestial and living life as a regular mortal becomes perfectly clear.
Despite how fascinating the theological angle was, though, I saw at least two problems with Ego. First, the story he tells Peter when they first reach Ego's planet doesn't quite add up. Ego tells Peter that, while he was still alone in the cosmos, he imagined what biological life must be like, then began to fashion a body for himself that matched his vision of such life. That vision somehow just happened to be human. I have to wonder how Ego, even with his godlike intelligence, was able to guess so exactly what human life would look and be like, down to the chromosomal level. It would have made more sense, story-wise, for Ego to have assumed some other form, then to have created a human form for himself after stumbling upon humanity. My second problem with Ego is that he proved disappointingly easy to kill. A bomb at his core—really? After millions of years of self-evolution and matter-manipulation, Ego—who was supposedly a Celestial—was somehow unready for a "Star Wars"-style attack to his core? I find this hard to believe, and I have to wonder whether Ego is really dead. I suspect that, like Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen, Ego has the power to reassemble and reconstitute himself no matter how severe the insult to the mortal aspects of his being. But that's only a guess. I have no idea what James Gunn has in store for Peter's and/or Ego's future. With Ego apparently gone, Peter now appears to be a mere mortal. He still possesses Celestial genes (trivia: Ego is not a Celestial in the comics, nor is he Peter's father), and that has to mean something, even if Ego's destruction has rendered those genes dormant.
In all, G2 is a well-crafted audiovisual treat. The story, such as it is, moves along at a healthy clip and deals both humorously and seriously with important issues like friendship, family, mortality, and apparent immortality. The film was good enough for me to want to see it twice, and I'm sure I'll be snapping it up once it's available on video. If you haven't seen it in theaters yet, go catch it before it disappears from the big screen forever.
*Ego has spent years in obsessive pursuit of his son Peter ever since Yondu Udonta failed to deliver Peter, as a child, to him. Ego is also obsessed with the purpose he discovered for himself—an event called The Expansion, in which Ego has seeded thousands or millions of worlds with plant-like buds of his own essence, spores designed to take over the worlds on which they've been planted, turning those worlds into extensions of Ego himself, eventually making Ego as large as the universe. Ego can't realize the Expansion on his own, which is one reason why he fathered Peter: the Expansion requires the power of a second Celestial. These are the issues that keep Ego up at night.

An elderly homeowner shot a home invader earlier this month, ending a father-son crime spree.
The altercation happened on the day that Vladimir Sanchez was released from prison. His 16-year-old son allegedly stole his mother's car and took it to pick up his father from prison. Miami Police later spotted Sanchez driving the stolen car and pulled it over.
As they began to arrest Sanchez, his son jumped out of the passenger seat and fled the scene. As police searched the area, the teen allegedly stole some clothes from a home's washing machine in order to change his appearance. At some point, the teen allegedly entered the home of the elderly man.
That's when the 82-year-old was startled by a noise in his basement. When he went to investigate, police said, the teen confronted him and shoved him. That's when the 82-year-old shot the teen in the buttocks.

Now I want to talk about the left’s reaction to this phenomenon [i.e., the rise of the Islamic right]. It is most peculiar since one would expect that the rise of anything so hostile to leftism would be detected instantly by some leftist somewhere, who would raise the alarm and alert all the others. Instead, the left has totally ignored the rise of the Islamic right. They don’t even seem aware of it and instead talk about extremists or radicals, but never fundamentalists or Islamo-fascists or the Islamic right. Or they will deny that certain people who are obviously Muslim (like members of ISIS) are Muslim. However, they are quite ready to denounce anyone on the right in the West as Islamophobic. For the left, the real problem is the rise of Islamophobia, but as I pointed out recently, this is like worrying about Germanophobia in the 1930s, when the real worry was the rise of the Nazi party. Of course, no one back in the 1930s seems to have worried about Germanophobia, but it is also true that the left was much less anti-Nazi back then than its current rhetoric would indicate. In fact, they seemed rather confused about the movement and what to do about it, and even made a pact with the Nazis in 1939. Well, at least the left back then had an excuse since Nazism and fascism were new movements, while conservative Islam goes back centuries, so leftists today have no excuse for not understanding what is happening. Then again, I have already argued that the left is suicidal (here), and that is something involving unconscious forces I know nothing about. Perhaps the frenzy over trivial things like pronouns is some kind of deep awareness on the left’s part that there is trouble ahead, trouble that can be avoided for now by focusing on ever more extreme trivialities.

Walk Thoughts #238: final post, final thoughts

Well... I guess this is it: the final Walk Thoughts post. There's a lot to say about this "make-up" walk, but let's take you through the pictures first. Click on each image to enlarge, then right-click on the enlarged image and hit "view image in new tab" to see the image at full size.
I got to the Express Bus Terminal early enough for the bus not to be there when I arrived.
I was there so early that two other buses came and occupied that spot before my bus to Sangju City finally arrived. Here's a blurry shot of my bus's interior:
When I got to Sangju, I took a taxi to the Sangju Sangpoong Bridge, which is where I needed to start my makeup walk. Here's a shot of the bridge:

A few kilometers down the trail, I hit my first major hill, the first of several. A few Western bikers passed me, and as I walked, I watched them in the distance, slowly mounting this uphill at a painfully slow pace:

I've gone down the other side of the mountain and ended up on some flat land with various touristy spots along the road. See the geodesic dome in the distance (off to the left)? On the right is a restaurant that caters to cyclists.

Perhaps a seoweon (Confucian academy)? The stonework makes me think that that's not a good guess. I'm great at recognizing temples, but not so good at identifying other types of older Korean architecture, which can often look similar to temples. Whatever building or campus this is, it's obviously been restored. Wooden structures need constant rebuilding (due to fire, rot, etc.), but even stonework needs to be replaced now and again.

The bike trail turned left into this park-like area, which turned out to be a large property on which could be found public restrooms, restaurants, picnic areas, campgrounds, and even a sculpture garden, in which I spent some time madly photographing everything I could before time pressure forced me to continue onward. Let me just say that I find most sculpture gardens calming and therapeutic, and I don't know why I don't seek them out more often. Anyway, here's the initial uphill:

It says yayeong (camping) and glaemping ("glamping," a portmanteau of "glamour" and "camping," i.e., spending the night in these huge, well-appointed tents with all the comforts of a hotel room). A larger-than-usual group of tap, which can mean "pagoda" or these little, delicately stacked cairns that you can often find in the mountains as sort of the Eastern version of Western mountain cairns built by hikers and/or ancients:

UPDATE: these are the characters gyeong cheon dae, the name for this region. Gyeong might mean "field"; cheon definitely means "sky"; dae means twelve different things; at a guess, it's a signifier for a place:

...and now we reach the sculpture garden, where I could have remained all day. It was filled with large wooden sculptures that called to mind both jangseung and various Buddhist works of art, as well as Western Catholicism because many of the figures are shown wearing robes held together at the waist by ropes in a manner reminiscent of Franciscan attire. The sculpture garden is called Isaek Sculpture Garden. I think the term isaek means "unusual" or "out of the ordinary." I had to wonder whether it meant "differently colored," given that there's a Chinese character pronounced "ee" that means "different," and the word saek means "color." This is an information-pamphlet holder:
The name/title of the previously photographed sculpture is shown below. The Korean at the top says bok, which means "happiness" or "good fortune." But the Chinese in parentheses says o bok, which refers to the Five Happinesses in Chinese thinking: longevity, wealth, health, virtue in life, and a peaceful death.
Below: Franciscan monk meets Easter Island head. I'll have to get back to you as to what these Chinese characters mean. I've already tried searching for the first character, and I keep coming up empty. The second character is neung, which means "endure." That fits the Korean, which says Chamara, a command to be patient. It could be that the first character also means "endure." Chinese expressions, at least as used by Koreans, are often pleonastic.
Below: the Korean shows bun-no, which means "fury." The Chinese characters also both mean "anger," so I'm guessing this is another pleonastic expression.
Below: I think inyeon here refers to fate or destiny.

This stone marker was on the property of what I'm almost positive is a proper seoweon, i.e., a Confucian academy. In fact, I think the Chinese reads Donam Seoweon. The word do means "Tao," and nam means "south," but I'm not sure how best to translate "Donam" into English. South Way? South of the Way? (Tao simply meant "road" or "way" or "course" before it acquired its philosophical meaning.)

The Chinese characters here need to be read from right to left: In Deok Mun, the door (or gate) of personal virtue (person-virtue-door). Apropos, given the purpose of a Confucian academy: to cultivate the whole person. This comes from a time when education actually meant something because it had intrinsic value and wasn't seen merely as a means to getting a decent, secure job later in life. But I'll save my ranting for later.
I need to go character by character down the line to figure out what this stone marker is all about. In the meantime, just bask in its obvious importance.

One kilometer to Sangju Dam's certification center and the acquisition of my missing stamp! Alas, I'd forgotten to bring along my Moleskine, so I figured I'd stamp my tiny spiral notebook, then tape the stamp to the inside of my Moleskine.

I sat down to an MRE for lunch. MREs are a pain to carry if you must carry several of them, but since I had only a single MRE on Saturday, my backpack was light, and there was no problem. This MRE was particularly good, being chicken pesto pasta. Alas, the packet of cheese didn't match the Italian-flavored breadsticks, but a man does what he can to adapt:

Rice paddies were everywhere along this section. If Seoul and Busan are the equivalents of the US east and west coasts, then my walk took me all the way through the Korean equivalent of "flyover country," i.e., Trumpland. This is where people really work for a living.

A causeway is technically a raised roadway leading over water or wet land (e.g., a swamp). This road, leading me above and between flooded rice paddies, felt like a causeway.

I'd have liked to stand in the spray for an hour, but I had electronic equipment on me, so that was a negatory. Then again, that spray could have been pumped straight from the river...
At this point, I'm just about to embark upon the most dangerous part of the walk: crossing the Joongdong Bridge, which had no bike/pedestrian lanes. I had to stop many, many times during the crossing to allow cars to pass me. Not my happiest moment.

By this point, I was getting confused as to why, with only a few kilometers left in my walk, I hadn't seen anything I remembered. Last time around, I walked five miles (about 8 km) from the second guest house to the Nakdan Dam. It was during that walk that I met the puppy... but up to this point during Saturday's walk, I hadn't seen any territory that I recognized. Had my first walk been a completely different route? What was going on, here? This tall bridge didn't look familiar, and I think I had perhaps four kilometers to go. I was beginning to worry that I'd never see the puppy.

The afternoon was getting darker and cooler, which brought out clouds of gnats. The gnats were swarming randomly, though, so I didn't have to worry about being chased by gnat-clouds. I simply kept walking, and the bugs fell behind.
Now this began to look familiar. Another uphill—one of the last ones:

As before, there was the pup, and there was this tiny, much older dog that yapped and yapped at me. I had come prepared this time: when the puppy came up to me, I brought out my small bag of very expensive jerky and began feeding pieces to the dog, bit by bit.
How can you not love that face?
The dog was quick. He snarfed up the beef so fast that it was impossible for me to catch him in mid-bite. The shot below was taken a millisecond after the dog had gobbled a piece of jerky that I had tossed to the ground to give myself time to get a photo of dog-plus-food.
Here, at last, I happened on a good tactic: I dangled the jerky over the dog, which made him hesitate just long enough for me to snap a pic.
I got this awkward shot while petting the puppy. I guess I stretched the skin on his face, which is why one of his eyes looks so freakish:
The puppy was constantly moving out of frame, and when he was in frame, he'd often be looking away, so I'd have to say "Hey!" (or "Ya!"—the Korean equivalent) to get him to focus on me and my camera.
I hadn't noticed these jangseung during my previous walk through this section, so I took the opportunity to rectify that oversight:

The puppy, now well fed thanks to my bag of treats, followed me farther down the path this time. He really needs to be trained in how to take food from a human hand: he kept biting my fingers in his eagerness to get at the jerky. Here's a final shot of my buddy:
The rest of the walk was exactly as before, so I saw little reason to re-take the same pics I had taken previously. I did, however, want to close with this one last image of the Nakdan Dam:
Epilogue (back to top)
As Jesus said on the cross in the gospel of John: It is accomplished. I can now claim, without lying, to have walked every damn inch of this country from my apartment in Seoul to land's end in Busan. I haven't just walked the distance: I've walked the entire way.
It shouldn't have had to be this way, of course: had I not encountered that snag in Sangju City, with the scatterbrained guest-house lady and the second guest house from hell, I wouldn't have had to take an extra Saturday to make this part of the walk up. But be that as it may, the walk is now done.
The 18-mile trek from Sangju to the Nakdan Dam turned out to be one of the most interesting stretches of the whole trip. It included a variety of terrain ranging from flat, wide-open spaces to a few challenging hills (including one hill with a nasty 18% grade—which doesn't sound steep but which is, in fact, pretty damn steep, even for a walker). The weather was hot but lovely the entire time; I often walked in shade and even benefited from the occasional river breeze. My feet, having been pampered for a whole week after I finished the Gukto Jongju on May 17, were aching by the end of Saturday's walk, and I think I've ended up with another blister on my right foot. It's not serious, being a mere white spot next to the ball of my foot, but the pain is a bit annoying. I trust that it'll be gone in a few days.
There were moments during the walk in which I was chugging along at 3.3 miles per hour—somewhat faster than my usual leisurely 3.0-mph pace. As for my pedometer stats:

Not a bad day of hiking, all in all. It was fun to be back out on the trail again after a week-long rest, but it was also sad to know that this trek was merely a one-off makeup walk, and that my Seoul-to-Busan project was now truly over. I went through a slew of mixed feelings as I walked, but the one feeling I hadn't expected to experience was anger. Allow me to explain.
Every good epilogue to a story should perform some special function. It should add an interesting wrinkle to the plot (e.g., the epilogues at the end of the third and fifth novels in the A Song of Ice and Fire series), or tie together some loose ends. My epilogue does both. To wit: I was barely three kilometers into my walk when a female biker hallooed me from behind. When she pulled up to me and stopped, her biking mask still on her face, she said, "Guest house!" and I immediately knew who she was: my least-favorite ajumma from this entire trip. Yes: this was the scatterbrained guest-house manager herself, out for a ride, and when I realized who she was, my mood immediately soured.
"What are you doing here on the trail?" she asked.
"I made it to Busan last week," I replied, "but I had to make this part of the trail up because I couldn't do it, thanks to you."
"I'm really sorry about that," she said, echoing the same sentiment she'd expressed on the day she canceled my reservation and sent me off to that second, hellish guest house. I wasn't in the mood for her faux apology.
"You know, I had made a reservation with you," I grated. "I had a right to stay at your place, but you threw me out. I was very angry that day."
The ajumma once again started in about how she had lacked a Western bed, and I cut her off. "I told you several times that I was fine sleeping on the floor," I snapped. I could have said more: I could have said that, thanks to her, I'll be shunning anything labeled "guest house" in Korea from now on. And thanks to her and her chunky, pushy friend at the second guest house, two out of three of my guest-house experiences along the trail had been horrible. I could have said that, after I had been trucked over to that second guest house on a day in which I had walked thirty kilometers, I was forced to wait until 10PM that night to get a room, and when I finally got one, it was a minbak-style bedroom in the house of a weird family. I could also have said that the bedroom's ondol floor was uncomfortably hot that night and the entire next day that I was there, and that the house's ajeossi barged into my room at inappropriate times instead of just letting me rest peacefully. I could have ranted a lot more, but I left things off there, making it clear that I blamed the ajumma for having ruined what should have been a restful end to a good day's walking. Part of me took grim satisfaction in having the opportunity to vent my spleen at this ajumma, who had done so much to ruin that part of my trip. She had probably thought she was doing me a kindness by sending me off to another guest house, but in the end, I ended up sleeping on the floor, anyway—on a floor that was too hot to be comfortable. Never again.
There wasn't much more to say after that. Without offering a proper, formal end to the conversation, I turned and started walking again. The ajumma lamely said, "Have a nice day," got on her bike, and sped off as I gave her a barely audible grunt in response. I should have told her never to cancel foreigners' reservations at her place in the future. The best I can do now, Dear Reader, is to warn you away from this lady's pied-à-terre, the Sangpoong-gyo Hanok Guest House, 300 meters away from the Sangju Sangpoong Bridge. Keep well away.
Things got better after that, but the day wasn't done with its surprises. The next surprise had to do with the milestones: early in my walk, I marched past a milestone saying that the Nakdong River estuary was 278 kilometers away, which seemed about right for that point along the trail. About two or three hours later, I walked past a milestone saying the estuary was 300 kilometers away. I did a mental double-take, suddenly wondering whether I had been walking backward, Twilight Zone-like, all this time. By the time I was done with my route, I think the milestones were saying that I was some 280 kilometers away. Someone needs to recount the kilometers and re-number those damn milestones, none of which I ever fully trusted. About the only distance measurements I trusted came from Naver Map on my cell phone, and I wasn't sure I trusted those measurements, either.
I've written above about how the walk concluded. I was unsure whether I'd see that cute little puppy again, but luckily, I did. The final two kilometers of the walk were smooth, beginning with a downhill slope from the puppy's gulch-y neighborhood and concluding with a nice walk across the Nakdan Dam to the certification center and my waiting taxi. The ride to Sangju City was quiet and beautiful as I watched the countryside roll by.
The bus I took back to Seoul from Sangju went to East Seoul Terminal (Dong Seoul Jonghap Teomineol); I took a cab from the terminal to my apartment. The cabbie humorously remarked that he knew I'd had a workout because he could smell me. I apologized for my reek; he laughed it off and said not to worry about it, but the social damage was already done. Koreans normally have no filter when they talk to you: they say pretty much whatever pops into their heads. One way to look at that trait is to say they're honest, sincere, no-bullshit people. Another spin is to say they're boorish, uncultured assholes who can't control their mouths. Take your pick. My own pick varies according to my mood.
So now it's done. I've finally covered every inch of the path from Seoul to Busan. Having already provided, in previous posts, plenty of ruminations on the deeper issues and themes of this walk, I'll end by offering some advice to prospective walkers of the Gukto Jongju route.
1. Know that "the Gukto Jongju" isn't a single path, but a network of paths all tending in a particular direction. Taken together, these paths will get you from Seoul (or even Incheon) to Busan. Sometimes, when a mountain is in your way, the path will split, and you'll have to choose which way you'll take to skirt the mountain. One way will undoubtedly be longer and more difficult; this is the time to consult Naver Map on your phone to check distances and contour lines (remember that Naver Map does, in fact, show contour lines, which is extremely useful, albeit occasionally misleading).
2. If my experience is any guide, expect to camp for only three days of your walk. Depending on how you schedule walks and map out your distances, it may be possible to reduce that number to only one or two days' camping. With good planning, you could, in theory, walk most of the Seoul-Busan path largely unencumbered, secure in the knowledge that some sort of food and lodging can be found at almost every stop along the way. Convenience stores and restaurants tend to be in the vicinity of motels, so resupplying should never be an issue. With that same good planning, you could pick up your camping gear about two-thirds of the way through the walk, use the gear on the days needed, then drop the gear off at a post office and send it home via taekbae (courier delivery).
3. Avoid doing something stupid like hiking during the monsoon season. I was extremely lucky, I think, to experience as little rain as I did despite hiking in April. If I tried the same hike at the same time of year in 2018, I doubt the weather would be quite so accommodating. That said, mid-spring is the perfect time, temperature-wise, for a cross-country hike. It's late May now, and Saturday's hike was a reminder that summer heat can be a killer. The weather wasn't as hot and humid as it gets in July and August, but I could feel the imminent arrival of full-on summer. I had originally planned to start hiking in May, with the hike possibly spilling over into June. It was my boss who insisted that I take my vacation a few weeks earlier for reasons related to our company's publishing schedule, and at first I resented having my plans countermanded. It turned out that the boss had, perhaps inadvertently, picked the perfect time of year for me to engage in a cross-country endeavor. Korean spring is beautiful; don't waste your time hiking in the summer or winter.
4. Some will deride what I did as a form of "credit-card tourism," given that I motelled my way across most of the country. "A real man would have camped every night!" such people will declare. Maybe so, but then my pack would have weighed 60-70 pounds because it would have been laden with food for the entire trip. That, in turn, would have translated into serious back and foot problems. To my mind, the "real man" would be stupid not to take advantage of the fact that civilization is almost everywhere along the path. Don't make this trip into some dumb survival game; just enjoy the sights, learn something about the land and the people, and don't waste your life making things unnecessarily difficult for yourself.
5. On that note: take it easy. Despite the blistering, the aches, and all the other pains, I did what I could not to push myself to the point of blind fatigue. On some days, this wasn't possible, but I did manage to avoid injuring myself the way I did in 2008. Remember that you're doing the walk to have an enjoyable experience and to make good memories, not to engage in self-torture. Go slowly. Smell the roses. Drink it all in.
And that, I think, is all I have to say about this amazing walk that I took. It's finally over, and I can finally close this chapter of my life and move on. The weight I lost has caused one funny thing to happen: when I cinch my big leather belt to that final hole, the front end of the belt now wraps halfway again around my body. That's right: my belt circles my body 1.5 times! And I'm still fat, with about 30 kg of extra blubber to lose! Imagine what would happen were I to shed even more weight. Can we go for 2.0?

I got to the Express Bus Terminal early enough for the bus not to be there when I arrived.
I was there so early that two other buses came and occupied that spot before my bus to Sangju City finally arrived. Here's a blurry shot of my bus's interior:

Perhaps a seoweon (Confucian academy)? The stonework makes me think that that's not a good guess. I'm great at recognizing temples, but not so good at identifying other types of older Korean architecture, which can often look similar to temples. Whatever building or campus this is, it's obviously been restored. Wooden structures need constant rebuilding (due to fire, rot, etc.), but even stonework needs to be replaced now and again.

The bike trail turned left into this park-like area, which turned out to be a large property on which could be found public restrooms, restaurants, picnic areas, campgrounds, and even a sculpture garden, in which I spent some time madly photographing everything I could before time pressure forced me to continue onward. Let me just say that I find most sculpture gardens calming and therapeutic, and I don't know why I don't seek them out more often. Anyway, here's the initial uphill:

It says yayeong (camping) and glaemping ("glamping," a portmanteau of "glamour" and "camping," i.e., spending the night in these huge, well-appointed tents with all the comforts of a hotel room). It was filled with large wooden sculptures that called to mind both jangseung and various Buddhist works of art, as well as Western Catholicism because many of the figures are shown wearing robes held together at the waist by ropes in a manner reminiscent of Franciscan attire. The sculpture garden is called Isaek Sculpture Garden. I think the term isaek means "unusual" or "out of the ordinary." I had to wonder whether it meant "differently colored," given that there's a Chinese character pronounced "ee" that means "different," and the word saek means "color." This is an information-pamphlet holder:
The name/title of the previously photographed sculpture is shown below. The Korean at the top says bok, which means "happiness" or "good fortune." But the Chinese in parentheses says o bok, which refers to the Five Happinesses in Chinese thinking: longevity, wealth, health, virtue in life, and a peaceful death.
Below: Franciscan monk meets Easter Island head. I'll have to get back to you as to what these Chinese characters mean. I've already tried searching for the first character, and I keep coming up empty. The second character is neung, which means "endure." That fits the Korean, which says Chamara, a command to be patient. It could be that the first character also means "endure." Chinese expressions, at least as used by Koreans, are often pleonastic.
Below: the Korean shows bun-no, which means "fury." The Chinese characters also both mean "anger," so I'm guessing this is another pleonastic expression.

This stone marker was on the property of what I'm almost positive is a proper seoweon, i.e., a Confucian academy. In fact, I think the Chinese reads Donam Seoweon. The word do means "Tao," and nam means "south," but I'm not sure how best to translate "Donam" into English. South Way? South of the Way? (Tao simply meant "road" or "way" or "course" before it acquired its philosophical meaning.)

The Chinese characters here need to be read from right to left: In Deok Mun, the door (or gate) of personal virtue (person-virtue-door). Apropos, given the purpose of a Confucian academy: to cultivate the whole person. This comes from a time when education actually meant something because it had intrinsic value and wasn't seen merely as a means to getting a decent, secure job later in life. But I'll save my ranting for later.
I need to go character by character down the line to figure out what this stone marker is all about. In the meantime, just bask in its obvious importance.

At this point, I'm just about to embark upon the most dangerous part of the walk: crossing the Joongdong Bridge, which had no bike/pedestrian lanes. I had to stop many, many times during the crossing to allow cars to pass me. Not my happiest moment.

By this point, I was getting confused as to why, with only a few kilometers left in my walk, I hadn't seen anything I remembered. Last time around, I walked five miles (about 8 km) from the second guest house to the Nakdan Dam. It was during that walk that I met the puppy... but up to this point during Saturday's walk, I hadn't seen any territory that I recognized. Had my first walk been a completely different route? What was going on, here? This tall bridge didn't look familiar, and I think I had perhaps four kilometers to go. I was beginning to worry that I'd never see the puppy.

The afternoon was getting darker and cooler, which brought out clouds of gnats. The gnats were swarming randomly, though, so I didn't have to worry about being chased by gnat-clouds. I simply kept walking, and the bugs fell behind.
Now this began to look familiar. Another uphill—one of the last ones:

As before, there was the pup, and there was this tiny, much older dog that yapped and yapped at me. I had come prepared this time: when the puppy came up to me, I brought out my small bag of very expensive jerky and began feeding pieces to the dog, bit by bit.
How can you not love that face?
The dog was quick. He snarfed up the beef so fast that it was impossible for me to catch him in mid-bite. The shot below was taken a millisecond after the dog had gobbled a piece of jerky that I had tossed to the ground to give myself time to get a photo of dog-plus-food.
Here, at last, I happened on a good tactic: I dangled the jerky over the dog, which made him hesitate just long enough for me to snap a pic.
I got this awkward shot while petting the puppy. I guess I stretched the skin on his face, which is why one of his eyes looks so freakish:
The puppy was constantly moving out of frame, and when he was in frame, he'd often be looking away, so I'd have to say "Hey!" (or "Ya!"—the Korean equivalent) to get him to focus on me and my camera.
I hadn't noticed these jangseung during my previous walk through this section, so I took the opportunity to rectify that oversight:

Epilogue (back to top)
As Jesus said on the cross in the gospel of John: It is accomplished. I can now claim, without lying, to have walked every damn inch of this country from my apartment in Seoul to land's end in Busan. I haven't just walked the distance: I've walked the entire way.
It shouldn't have had to be this way, of course: had I not encountered that snag in Sangju City, with the scatterbrained guest-house lady and the second guest house from hell, I wouldn't have had to take an extra Saturday to make this part of the walk up. But be that as it may, the walk is now done.
The 18-mile trek from Sangju to the Nakdan Dam turned out to be one of the most interesting stretches of the whole trip. It included a variety of terrain ranging from flat, wide-open spaces to a few challenging hills (including one hill with a nasty 18% grade—which doesn't sound steep but which is, in fact, pretty damn steep, even for a walker). The weather was hot but lovely the entire time; I often walked in shade and even benefited from the occasional river breeze. My feet, having been pampered for a whole week after I finished the Gukto Jongju on May 17, were aching by the end of Saturday's walk, and I think I've ended up with another blister on my right foot. It's not serious, being a mere white spot next to the ball of my foot, but the pain is a bit annoying. I trust that it'll be gone in a few days.

I could also have said that the bedroom's ondol floor was uncomfortably hot that night and the entire next day that I was there, and that the house's ajeossi barged into my room at inappropriate times instead of just letting me rest peacefully. I could have ranted a lot more, but I left things off there, making it clear that I blamed the ajumma for having ruined what should have been a restful end to a good day's walking. Part of me took grim satisfaction in having the opportunity to vent my spleen at this ajumma, who had done so much to ruin that part of my trip. She had probably thought she was doing me a kindness by sending me off to another guest house, but in the end, I ended up sleeping on the floor, anyway—on a floor that was too hot to be comfortable. Never again.
There wasn't much more to say after that. Without offering a proper, formal end to the conversation, I turned and started walking again. The ajumma lamely said, "Have a nice day," got on her bike, and sped off as I gave her a barely audible grunt in response. I should have told her never to cancel foreigners' reservations at her place in the future. The best I can do now, Dear Reader, is to warn you away from this lady's pied-à-terre, the Sangpoong-gyo Hanok Guest House, 300 meters away from the Sangju Sangpoong Bridge. Keep well away.
Things got better after that, but the day wasn't done with its surprises. The next surprise had to do with the milestones: early in my walk, I marched past a milestone saying that the Nakdong River estuary was 278 kilometers away, which seemed about right for that point along the trail. About two or three hours later, I walked past a milestone saying the estuary was 300 kilometers away. I did a mental double-take, suddenly wondering whether I had been walking backward, Twilight Zone-like, all this time. By the time I was done with my route, I think the milestones were saying that I was some 280 kilometers away. Someone needs to recount the kilometers and re-number those damn milestones, none of which I ever fully trusted. About the only distance measurements I trusted came from Naver Map on my cell phone, and I wasn't sure I trusted those measurements, either.
I've written above about how the walk concluded. I was unsure whether I'd see that cute little puppy again, but luckily, I did. The final two kilometers of the walk were smooth, beginning with a downhill slope from the puppy's gulch-y neighborhood and concluding with a nice walk across the Nakdan Dam to the certification center and my waiting taxi. The ride to Sangju City was quiet and beautiful as I watched the countryside roll by.
The bus I took back to Seoul from Sangju went to East Seoul Terminal (Dong Seoul Jonghap Teomineol); I took a cab from the terminal to my apartment. The cabbie humorously remarked that he knew I'd had a workout because he could smell me. I apologized for my reek; he laughed it off and said not to worry about it, but the social damage was already done. Koreans normally have no filter when they talk to you: they say pretty much whatever pops into their heads. One way to look at that trait is to say they're honest, sincere, no-bullshit people. Another spin is to say they're boorish, uncultured assholes who can't control their mouths. Take your pick. My own pick varies according to my mood.
So now it's done. I've finally covered every inch of the path from Seoul to Busan. Having already provided, in previous posts, plenty of ruminations on the deeper issues and themes of this walk, I'll end by offering some advice to prospective walkers of the Gukto Jongju route.
1. Know that "the Gukto Jongju" isn't a single path, but a network of paths all tending in a particular direction. Taken together, these paths will get you from Seoul (or even Incheon) to Busan. Sometimes, when a mountain is in your way, the path will split, and you'll have to choose which way you'll take to skirt the mountain. One way will undoubtedly be longer and more difficult; this is the time to consult Naver Map on your phone to check distances and contour lines (remember that Naver Map does, in fact, show contour lines, which is extremely useful, albeit occasionally misleading).
2. If my experience is any guide, expect to camp for only three days of your walk. Depending on how you schedule walks and map out your distances, it may be possible to reduce that number to only one or two days' camping. With good planning, you could, in theory, walk most of the Seoul-Busan path largely unencumbered, secure in the knowledge that some sort of food and lodging can be found at almost every stop along the way. Convenience stores and restaurants tend to be in the vicinity of motels, so resupplying should never be an issue. With that same good planning, you could pick up your camping gear about two-thirds of the way through the walk, use the gear on the days needed, then drop the gear off at a post office and send it home via taekbae (courier delivery).
3. Avoid doing something stupid like hiking during the monsoon season. I was extremely lucky, I think, to experience as little rain as I did despite hiking in April. If I tried the same hike at the same time of year in 2018, I doubt the weather would be quite so accommodating. That said, mid-spring is the perfect time, temperature-wise, for a cross-country hike. It's late May now, and Saturday's hike was a reminder that summer heat can be a killer. The weather wasn't as hot and humid as it gets in July and August, but I could feel the imminent arrival of full-on summer. I had originally planned to start hiking in May, with the hike possibly spilling over into June. It was my boss who insisted that I take my vacation a few weeks earlier for reasons related to our company's publishing schedule, and at first I resented having my plans countermanded. It turned out that the boss had, perhaps inadvertently, picked the perfect time of year for me to engage in a cross-country endeavor. Korean spring is beautiful; don't waste your time hiking in the summer or winter.
4. Some will deride what I did as a form of "credit-card tourism," given that I motelled my way across most of the country. "A real man would have camped every night!" such people will declare. Maybe so, but then my pack would have weighed 60-70 pounds because it would have been laden with food for the entire trip. That, in turn, would have translated into serious back and foot problems. To my mind, the "real man" would be stupid not to take advantage of the fact that civilization is almost everywhere along the path. Don't make this trip into some dumb survival game; just enjoy the sights, learn something about the land and the people, and don't waste your life making things unnecessarily difficult for yourself.
5. On that note: take it easy. Despite the blistering, the aches, and all the other pains, I did what I could not to push myself to the point of blind fatigue. On some days, this wasn't possible, but I did manage to avoid injuring myself the way I did in 2008. Remember that you're doing the walk to have an enjoyable experience and to make good memories, not to engage in self-torture. Go slowly. Smell the roses. Drink it all in.
And that, I think, is all I have to say about this amazing walk that I took. It's finally over, and I can finally close this chapter of my life and move on. The weight I lost has caused one funny thing to happen: when I cinch my big leather belt to that final hole, the front end of the belt now wraps halfway again around my body. That's right: my belt circles my body 1.5 times! And I'm still fat, with about 30 kg of extra blubber to lose! Imagine what would happen were I to shed even more weight. Can we go for 2.0?
