Your reference to China's hegemony reminded me that there's a fantastic article in the new Atlantic Monthly by Robert Kagan about how the US Pacific Command has been quietly preparing to check China in the coming use through the use of Bismarckian strategic alliances with smaller Pacific players. Essential reading for those interested in Pacific strategic issues (and not just because it features the word "Bismarckian").
