Ave, Steve!

Awesome commentary (and it's just part one!) about the most awesome month in American cinematic history.

  1. Thank you, Bwana. It was an exciting time to be 14 and have the free time to see at least one movie every week.

Of the five films (Poltergeist, E.T., The Thing, Blade Runner, and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), your favorite? My guess is that you vote for Khan because of your penchant for Ricardo Montalban's greased nipples.

Leonard Nimoy famously noted, in his second autobiography I Am Spock, that those really were Montalban's pecs, and he really did pump iron to get them.

And yes, I'd say that "Star Trek 2" would be my favorite of the group, not least because, with all the Moby Dick imagery going around in that movie, the implication was that William Shatner was the White Whale.

"Star Trek: First Contact" returned to the Moby Dick tropes, with Picard as Ahab (and didn't Patrick Stewart actually play Ahab in a TV movie later on?) and the Borg as the White Whale. Perhaps it's no coincidence, then, that "First Contact" is my favorite of the Next Generation movies.
