on patrotism

Wikipedia has a whole range of famous quotes on patriotism, ranging from the brave and noble to the obnoxious and craven. My favorite comes from Mark Twain:

In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.

That says a lot about the human heart.
