I may need to see what other sites have to say, but it seems Canada has taken a big step in the direction of limiting free speech.
My own take on this matter isn't something I've gone into in depth on this blog, but my gut feeling is that you can identify yourself however you please. Chromosomally, for most human beings, there are only two sexes. But gender is another matter, as that's more a social construction than a brute biological reality. I'm perfectly prepared for human sexuality to shatter, not long from now, into a kaleidoscopic chaos of different sex and gender niches, especially as we get better at manipulating our own genomes and start crafting people who are radically different, genitally speaking. Imagine what humans will look like two centuries from now: they might not even be recognizable! I'm ready for that sci-fi reality to manifest itself.
At the same time, it's unfair to expect everyone to keep up with the latest updates to the Newspeak dictionary. Criminalizing speech is always a bad idea, so I stand against this latest bit of Canadian silliness.
From the Daily Caller (your link): "Canada passed a law Thursday making it illegal to use the wrong gender pronouns."
ReplyDeleteInteresting to read that since the actual bill does not say this at all.
My understanding of 'hate speech' or 'hate crimes' in the US is that there is no actual 'hate crime'. That is, saying, "I hate Muslims". is not a crime. But saying, "I hate Muslims" before, after or while killing Muslims means that the crime carries a tougher sentence. If someone goes out of their way to say, "I hate Muslims", then kills Muslims, the crime would appear to have some of the criteria for premeditation so it is reasonably consider more heinous that killing someone who happens to be Muslim due to, I don't know, road rage.
The professor interviewed may have difficulty with U of T rules regarding students but that is not directly related to the law.
This is a power grab by the left. The state will have yet another another excuse to surveil society, and all sorts of expensive, taxpayer-funded state bodies and entities will need to be set up to ensure that speech codes are followed and "hate speech" is stamped out. The threat of lawsuits against vaguely defined "discrimination" will also keep public intellectuals and companies in line as well. Leftward drift will continue as a result.
ReplyDeleteThis is another blow against freedom in the West. And don't think this is the end at all!

The Chinese went down this road in the sixties and seventies and eventually wised up. But they're a nation with a high average IQ. The West, I fear, is far dumber as a whole these days!
