Funniest thing I've read all day, and it's 1:05AM.
I have more to say on trans/gender issues, but not yet. This is a complex topic, and while some of the ethical and social issues arising from it are easy enough to form positions on, other issues require a measure of nuance, sophistication, and—dare I say it?—compassion. I'm still fumbling my way through all this, so please bear with me. More later.
There are many ways to approach this issue, but first of all making the discussion public and political at this stage is a great disservice to all who have gender identification problems. Such publicity encourages extremes of behavior and statements as well as rash decisions rather than a sober contemplation of the facts.
ReplyDeleteDecisions on such things as transgenders in the military, or homosexuals in the military need to be de-politicized and made subject to utilitarian rules. In the case of the military what works best is more important than what fits some social agenda.
I have always taken the view that what a person does in private is their business. Once the law says that one cannot discriminate under law on the basis of gender, etc. that should be enough. Forcing restrictions upon the law on private property is a loss of freedom for the individual. (But that is a whole other discussion.)
Peace,
Bill
