downtown Niort: City Hall and fortress

  1. That there is a nice fortress. It could hold out for a while from marauding Vikings or Saracens.

    You should ask Papa if the marshes in the area are the same ones where Catholics and Royalists sheltered during the Revolution. It sticks in my brain for some reason that the region in which they live was filled with anti-revolutionaries and that large parts of the communities around the marshes would disappear when the revolutionary guards would come through to pacify the area and collect taxes. (Though my brain may be addled on this...)
