an awesome rant about a ruined moviegoing experience

I think I finally understand why so many fellow Americans now eschew movie theaters in favor of home viewing. Americans, as a people, no longer seem to know how to conduct themselves in public,* and as a result, assholes abound in movie theaters (among other communal spaces). Below is a video by Adam Olinger in which he humorously describes a recent moviegoing experience that was ruined by cell-phone-using fuckheads:

I tend to think of Korea as a haven away from my increasingly crazy country. Being in Korea today is a lot like living in America during the 1980s: sure, there are unsavory aspects of society, but on the whole, people know what a man and a woman are, and while Koreans can themselves be loud, they're normally pretty well behaved in movie theaters, more or less like the Americans of my youth. Cell phones are turned off when the movie begins, and chatter during the movie, when it occurs, is pretty rare. It's a sad thing to watch my home country descend into shitholery. This is happening a lot faster than climate change, and I'm afraid that, by the time I'm really old, Korea will have followed America over the cliff.

__________

*To be fair, Americans have had a reputation, internationally, as loud and obnoxious people since forever. Ask any Europeans.

  1. TrueDat! It's worse on the roads where civility is loooong gone. My fellow Americans will run you off the road just to get to the red light ahead of you. Or how about Black Friday when my fellow Americans will stomp on each other over a stoooopid sale item. This country is doomed in more ways than one.

  2. The last time I was in a cinema in the US, it wasn't the fellow guests that were the problem, it was the fact that the place was as cold as a meat locker! AC use has just gotten out of hand.

But that was five years ago, so who knows.

  3. Charles,

If you weighed 240 pounds, you'd probably feel warmer. Trust me.
