This new type of propeller looks quite promising:

If they're able to scale the design up for cargo ships, the fuel savings will be enormous. And quieter drones will mean fewer disturbances in parks and neighborhoods and along bridge walkways (and anywhere else that people fly drones), but there are police and military implications as well. Right now, the main disadvantage of these new propellers is how expensive they are, but costs will come down, as the video says, once the propellers become popular and "economies of scale" take over.
