Ted Kaczynski, a.k.a. the Unabomber, is dead at the age of 81, having died inside his prison cell. Wikipedia's main article on Kaczynski says he sent out sixteen bombs, but the article also has a chart that shows seventeen incidents. Three people were killed by the mad math professor's bombs; several folks were injured, and two of the bombs were successfully defused. A mathematics prodigy earlier in his life, Kaczynski became convinced that post-Industrial Revolution technology was a destructive force for society and culture. Kaczynski's brother David had personal letters that were used to analyze the writing style of a Unabomber manifesto called Industrial Society and Its Future; the analysis determined there was a high probability that the Unabomber and Kaczynski were the same person, so Ted's brother David was instrumental in the identification and catching of the Unabomber. Ted was arrested in his mountain cabin, where authorities found plenty more writing samples, several partially assembled bombs, and one fully assembled bomb. Some people, upon learning of Kaczynski's capture, theorized he was also the Zodiac Killer. While some of his defenders tried to help him by labeling him as insane, Kaczynski rejected the labeling and was, in fact, found to be perfectly competent by a number of psychiatrists. In prison, he befriended fellow terrorist-bombers Ramzi Yousef (1993 World Trade Center) and Timothy McVeigh (1995 Oklahoma City, but there are theories about McVeigh's possible innocence). In prison, Kaczynski was serving eight life sentences without parole. In his final years, he was transferred from Florence, Colorado to Butner, North Carolina for health reasons. This is where he died.
