I must say... when I first started seeing ads for the Netflix adaptation of the Japanese manga fantasy-pirate-adventure property "One Piece," I wasn't at all interested, and frankly, I'm still not that interested. The whole thing looks like a confused, anachronistic, awkwardly cobbled-together mess. But maybe the series is worth a watch: plenty of my unwoke go-to critics, such as The Critical Drinker and Paul Chato, seem to like it.
For what it is worth... My son is a huge fan of "One Piece." He has (I estimate) 250+ volumes of the manga in his room. He has a "OP" pirate flag up on the wall of his dorm. He has said that the show is no good. But not because of wokeness or anything. Just because the manga is much better.
ReplyDeleteThe unwoke critics affirm that, because the manga's author has tight creative control of the streaming show, "One Piece" isn't really woke.
ReplyDeleteDoes Ian pronounce manga to rhyme with the "kanga" in "kangaroo," or does he pronounce it the more Japanese way, assonant with "Honda" ("mahng-gah")?
