Monday-morning numbers

blood sugar: 139 (up a bit from 129 previously)
blood pressure: 115/71
weight: 115 kg (water-weight fluctuations)
pulse-ox: 97%
pulse: 66
estimated A1c since 4/15: 7.72 (up somewhat because of... indiscretions)

The above is probably all thanks to the meds. I'd love to credit diet and exercise, but as my old doctor noted years ago, meds are a powerful thing. That said, I'm not doing too badly.

Blood sugar is up slightly, probably because I finished cooking after midnight last night and therefore didn't go walking. My resting pulse has generally been great since I started the new regimen of meds, which I think are balanced just right since my last visit to the hospital (but I'd like to ditch the insulin). While I eventually want to lose another 20 kg, I'll settle for 10 kg as an intermediate goal for now. This isn't about making my abs visible or anything so vain: I just want to be able to move around more freely and energetically without being so ponderous. Weight loss would also make calisthenics easier.

Anyway, I'll be walking tonight—the shorter 9K route.

  1. Meds or not, those are all very impressive numbers. If you lose 20kg or so over the next year or two, we'll officially be the same weight. I'm happy to report feeling no more ponderous at 90kg than I did at 80kg, although I'm sure my heart would beg to differ.

100% agreed on dropping the insulin. Lifesaving, stopgap measure, but raises cardiovascular mortality long-term and even slight errors in dosage or dispensation can lead to hypoglycemia. And those blasted injections!

I think the weight loss alone should bring your A1C down to the lower 6/upper 5 range eventually and fasting blood glucose to around 100~110, fingers crossed.

Really a remarkable recovery, if you think about it.

  2. I was 90 kg after living nearly a year as a college junior in Switzerland, hiking almost every day. My mother was shocked when she saw me bopping out of the airport after I'd gotten back to the States. Alas, re-ensconced at Georgetown for my senior year, I regained the weight I'd lost and was back to my porky self (about 105 kg) by graduation. I had not learned the secret to keeping weight off. Still haven't, really. It's a lifelong battle, and some wisdom is hard to learn. Or maybe it's easy to learn intellectually but hard to stick with emotionally.

Truer words were never spoken. Or written.
