The German left is desperate. And like in America, the country's major institutions, including its intelligence agencies, have been weaponized by the left.
German Spy Agency Officially Classifies AfD Party as ‘Extremist’The federal intelligence agency said that the populist political party aims to exclude certain population groups from ‘equal participation in society.’
Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has officially classified the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) as extremist.
Having regarded the AfD as a suspected extremist movement since 2021, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), on May 2 designated the populist party as “right-wing extremist,” following an “intensive and comprehensive expert examination.”
This means that intelligence services now have the right to keep it under surveillance.
BfV said in a statement that AfD’s approach to ethnicity is “not compatible with the free democratic basic order.”
According to BfV’s statement, AfD does not consider German nationals with a migration background from Muslim-origin countries as equal members of the German people.
BfV Vice President Sinan Selen and Vice President Dr. Silke Willems in a joint statement said: “We have come to the conviction that the Alternative for Germany is a definitively right-wing extremist movement.”
Certain factions of the AfD such as its youth wing had already been classified as extremist.
In the party’s first response to the report, the leader of a regional parliamentary group, Anton Baron, said: “It is sad to see the state of democracy in our country when the established parties now resort to the most politically questionable means to act against the strongest opposition party.”
Sad but not that surprising. This witch-hunt of the AfD has been going on for years. It mirrors the US left's desperate attempts to keep Donald Trump from running for a second term, and the left's continued attempts to use the institutions it holds to undermine Trump's agenda at every turn. Even if the AfD were somehow to prevail against this intelligence agency, you can bet that other leftist institutions would do their damnedest to make the party electorally ineligible or utterly unable to implement the obvious will of the people. The people are going to have to do something. Most likely with their bare hands.
ADDENDUM:
So, if I’m following, “democracy” is when the security services investigate a leading political party, make an unpublished determination of “extremism” that licenses surveillance, and then the courts decide whether to ban that party. O-kay. https://t.co/x6lZx81ijA

ADDENDUM 2: the Instapundit commentariat weighs in:
- Because nothing exemplifies "democracy" more than a handful of members of the nomenklatura overruling the will of the voters.
- 'We must destroy our democracy in order to save it.'
- The Germans—like the Palestinians—seem to be incapable of self-government without eventually resorting to totalitarianism.
- Instead of a banana republic, it's a bratwurst democracy.
- By trying to stop the Nazis, the Germans are once again becoming the Nazis. It seems that inside every German, there is a little fascist trying to get out.
- Right-wing extremism, the term socialists use to define any opposition to them.
- Apparently learned absolutely nothing from their more recently history. Or maybe they did...
- Interesting how "democracy" always ends up with the Regime following this pattern: opposition demonized, then censored, then banned (Germany is here), then gulag'ed, then genocided.
- Because banning a political party with significant popular support always leads to more peace, prosperity, and liberty.
- Notice who they want to "protect" their "constitution and rule of law" from .... the majority of German citizens.
- Memo for Germany: When you deny electorates reasonable political alternatives, they often turn to unreasonable political alternatives. You'd think the German elites would have learned this from their own history. Nahhhhh.....
