ugh... when will I do a proper Tron review?

I've written brief meditations about "Tron" and "Tron: Legacy" (see here, too) before, but I've never done a proper review of either film. I sat down to write a review of "Tron: Legacy" tonight, having just rewatched it after having seen Dave Cullen's videos in which he declares it one of his favorite movies, but it was just as awful as when I saw it years ago, so I gave up. I might write a review of the entire trilogy after "Tron: Ares" comes out (see the preview trailer here), but I can guarantee you that it's not going to be positive. As "cinematic universes" go, the Tron universe strikes me as sloppier than the Matrix movies. It has one central idea that is compelling to think about—that the Simulation Hypothesis is an accurate explanation of our situation—but that's about it. Everything else about the first two movies is a jumbled mess of terminological and conceptual gobbledygook crying out for better writing and better explanations. I found the experience of "Tron: Legacy" frustrating at best, despite the luminous presence of Olivia Wilde as an important character in the story (she also had some of the movie's funniest moments). Several stars from "Tron: Legacy" won't be returning to "Tron: Ares," such as Wilde and Garrett Hedlund, who played Kevin Flynn's son Sam, the central point-of-view character in "Legacy" (Kevin Flynn was played by Jeff Bridges in both "Tron" and "Tron: Legacy"; he'll be back for the third installment.) Most disappointingly, Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan Bradley/Tron in the first two films, will be absent as well. How do you have a Tron movie without Tron? I think "Tron: Ares" will be another movie I see on streaming video instead of in the theaters. This is a franchise that really ought to die.
