It's a lucky thing that I have both a Microsoft and an Adobe account: my purchase histories, complete with activation codes and product serial numbers, are all on record. This means that, instead of having to spend hundreds of dollars re-purchasing programs that got wiped away in the Great Flood of my flush-and-restart campaign, I was able to re-download, activate, and re-register those products for free. That goes for Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0, and Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 (although I must admit that it's tempting to upgrade Elements to 14). Other programs, which were free downloads to begin with, were also easy to restore: that would include Skype and Open Office.
At this point, I'm back up to speed, and my laptop is running on OSX Yosemite, which is the next step up in Mac OS evolution. Everything seems to be in working order; my data files—photos, MS Word documents, spreadsheets, etc.—are all backed up on my lovely, 750 GB external drive (thanks again, Hahna!). God is in His heaven and all is right with the world.
If only Ray Liotta's character in "Hannibal" could have received a similar renewal.
