According to John McCrarey down south in the Philippines, that part of the world is getting slammed by Typhoon Mangkhut. Meanwhile, at the US east coast, Hurricane Florence is tearing away at my American peeps, reportedly dropping 18 trillion gallons of water on the mainland USA—an entire Chesapeake Bay's worth of water.
John Mac has already lost power (based on what he's written before, the wiring in John's neighborhood is apparently so tenuous that power outages happen easily) and is operating on laptop batteries only, but he says he's getting only the edge of the storm's force. I had seen, earlier, that some computer model broke down in its attempt to calculate the titanic force of Mangkhut (in the Philippines, the typhoon's local name is supposed to be Ompong).
If you're facing down one of these two typhoons, batten down them hatches, stay safe and dry, and help your neighbors if you can.
Thanks, Kev. Survived the worst of the storm and truth be told it wasn't all that bad. Except for losing power which sucked. And yes, it seems it was confined to my upscale neighborhood. The guards told me a tree fell into the power lines and took down two poles. Which says a lot about how crappy those poles must have been installed.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, booked a room in town for the night and charged my batteries. Hopefully the power company will show a sense of urgency in making the repairs, but I'm not holding my breath.
Glad to hear you're in one piece. Have fun in your hotel! You seem to be hotelling it rather often. Time to buy a generator...? (Those things are hella loud if my buddy Mike's generator is any indication.) You can also get a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for your computer. I don't know if it would work with your A/C.
