China's version of ChatGPT

It's not ready for prime time, but China went ahead and "unveiled" its own version of ChatGPT, which is called ERNIE Bot, with ERNIE hilariously and nonsensically standing for "Enhanced Representation Through Knowledge Integration," thereby striking another blow for Engrish. The unveiling didn't reveal how the bot works; no one got to see an interactive demonstration. And the bot is, of course, limited by a host of "guardrails" against free speech, by which I mean things like criticism of political leaders and the ability to look up the truth about certain historical events, e.g., Tiananmen Square. 

The whole thing is basically a sad, funny sham:
