this doesn't actually sound all that bad to me

Headline:

Prince William Is ‘Seizing’ More Power From Ailing King Charles, on Track To Become ‘The Toughest Ruler the Royal Family Has Ever Seen’

In the last few months, a growing number of reports have been coming out of the United Kingdom that Royal heir to the throne Prince William has begun ‘flexing his royal muscles’.

The Prince of Wales has reportedly ramped-up preparations for his upcoming rule, and even now is said to be ‘seizing more power’ from his ailing father, King Charles.

New York Post reported:

“William, who is next in line to become king, is said to be putting his foot down on several key decisions about the Firm’s long-term future.”

It’s been widely reported how William’s implacable stances have kept Prince Harry and Meghan Markle away, as well as the disgraced Prince Andrew.

“’It’s no secret that anyone who pushes back against him will be swiftly shown the door’, a palace insider told the outlet.

‘He’s not willing to take any nonsense and the word is he’s already on his way to being the toughest ruler the family has ever seen’.”

William is more influential than ever, making the decisions to benefit the Crown in the long run.

“As his father, 76, continues to undergo cancer treatment, it appears the king is ‘bestowing more responsibility on [William] and by all accounts is acknowledging that his time to rule will be sooner, rather than later’, the source adds.”

William is determined to improve the Royals’ public image, and to cut unnecessary spending within ‘the Firm’.

“’[William] wants expenses to be monitored closely, and any fat trimmed straightaway’, the insider said. ‘He doesn’t want there to be any sense that special perks are being handed out to the royals. The days of wasteful spending and overconsumption are ending now that William is at the helm’, the source added.”

The article's headline and content don't match. How is any of this bad news? King Charles is himself a big-time leftie and softie, not to mention a damn cheater. Let's see some toughness among the royals! Make England Great Again! MEGA! Ha ha.

All that said, I have questions. The article is fairly substance-free. For example, when it quotes the Post as saying, “William, who is next in line to become king, is said to be putting his foot down on several key decisions about the Firm’s long-term future”: without any clarification ("key issues"?), this is little more than scaremongering. I expect better from the Post, which is normally fairly right-leaning.

And when the Post says William is "not willing to take any nonsense," this doesn't tell me what his basic orientation is, what counts as "nonsense" to him, which means I have to consult other sources to determine that.

The left-leaning Guardian offered this from February of last year:

“The prince is right to speak out on potentially contentious issues so long as he doesn't trespass on domestic political controversies or frighten the horses at Westminster. We got used to his grandmother for decades not saying anything remotely contentious, but the modern monarchy needs to show it does not float in a cloud of unknowing about what is happening in the world - and most royal supporters are not going to quibble with that. Only republicans seem to object to them saying anything at all, seemingly preferring them to be out of touch. It's not as if William is suddenly going to announce his conversion to socialism.”

Wikipedia notes William's interest in wildlife conservation, climate change, and HIV/AIDS, LGBT rights, mental illness, homelessness—pretty much all of the causes generally associated with the left. Does that make him a left-liberal? I have no idea; he seems to be a bit of a cipher as one digs deeper into his life. The first of Conquest's three laws of politics is that we are all conservative about what we know best, so William may well be a conservative/rightie on some issues. (A religion prof of mine once said that we are all fundamentalist about something.)

Anyway, nothing the article says supports the notion that William is "seizing power" as his father grows sicker. Having witnessed the ravages of cancer in my own mother, I have nothing but sympathy for King Charles, whatever his views and his sins, and for his son William, who I am sure is a hyoja (효자, filial son) in the best Korean sense.
