A donggaseu (pork cutlet) place opened up behind Charles's apartment near Seoul National campus, so I met him there tonight. Charles had been hit by a taxi while crossing the street around two weeks ago, and his wife had a medical condition that put her in the hospital as of this past Monday. So, being wifeless for the moment, Charles wanted company for dinner, which is why we met this evening. Conversation ranged all over as usual, but two recurring themes were (1) the aches and pains of life and (2) mortality. Only natural when you're over 50, I guess. Here's a look at what we old farts ate.

The food was good; my pork was surprisingly tender. The cooks know what they're doing. Charles couldn't finish his plate, skinny little guy that he is, so he let me have one hunk of his whitefish. That was good, too.
Charles's wife gets out of the hospital tomorrow. Word is that the food there is actually pretty good. The Missus had a restaurateur roommate who confirmed this.

Glad you enjoyed the meal, and that you were willing to make the trek out to my place. It was good to see you again.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you, too. Good luck to you and the Missus as you both heal. Thanks for introducing me to a tasty new place.
DeleteAlways a pleasure. And thanks for the cookies, too. I wanted to give them a try first, and I just had one a little earlier with my afternoon cup of tea. The texture was fine and perfectly cookie-like, in my opinion (you might recall that I like a little give in my cookies; crispy snappiness is reserved for biscuits). They tasted good, too, although I noticed a slightly fruity flavor that I imagine comes from the sweetener you used. It was not unpleasant, I'm just trying to remember if it was present in the last batch of cookies (or the last batch that I tasted, at any rate). Chocolate itself has a slight fruitiness to it as is, so the taste wasn't out of place.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what could've been fruity. I did add a bit of vanilla extract before I realized what I was doing, then I added a half-measure of almond extract to bring the cookies back to their original formula (which is my own variation on the ADIDAF recipe; I've used almond extract from the beginning instead of the recommended vanilla extract). Aside from that, the only thing I can think of is the chocolate itself, but it's just a bag of those small "pépites" that I've raved about before. The sweetener is the same as before: Truvia, which is half real brown sugar and half Stevia. So to reiterate: these aren't keto cookies. I've got real chips in there, and half of that sweetener is real sugar. But combined with the almond flour, the carbs are nevertheless radically reduced. Good luck to HJ as she nibbles.
