  1. 1939 had at least two, if not three, better movie months, especially if Westerns are your thing.

Crap, now I have to watch The Duke in "Stagecoach" and Jimmy Stewart in his classic western, "Destry Rides Again," again. Hard to believe that Jimmy also starrred in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" that same year, but many overlook Destry which also starred the truly remarkable and beautiful Marlene Dietrich.

  2. Well, I don't know my movie history, so I'll let you wrestle with my friend Steve on that point. I do know that I'm way, way behind on my pop culture, including old movies.

One thing I'm thinking of doing is drawing up a syllabus for a religion and film course. I've seen several R&F syllabi displayed online, and they've given me some interesting ideas.

  3. I know you like Bruce. Hulu has all the episodes of his short-lived Jack of All Trades series that he got because of his great run on "Hercules" and "Xena." You might also enjoy the "French" aspect of it.

Personally, I find his his Western series to be hard to beat.

  4. @John--1939 was a great year--quite possibly the best complete year for American film in history--and likely thus it will ever be.

I'm not really a huge fan of Destry Rides Again, though. It's good for what it is, but I prefer my Westerns a little grimmer. Winchester '73 is more my speed for a Stewart Western. Stagecoach? Awesome.

I agree on Brisco County. Great stuff, and it should have lasted longer.
