I just saw something on the Korean news this morning about Oprah possibly running for president. I was in the other room and didn't catch the whole thing, but... really? Come on, people. Can we at least try to return to some semblance of sanity?

I think Oprah is seriously contemplating a run, although I do wonder whether she'll actually do it. As a savvy, charismatic media figure, she could certainly give Donald Trump a run for his money in 2020, and I'd give her better odds against Trump than I'd give Hillary Clinton, who turned out to be tone-deaf and otherwise clueless during her campaign. Google says Oprah's net worth, as of 2017, is 2.8 billion dollars, and she's got many vested business interests, so she is, in many ways, another version of Trump. Of course, if she runs, her enemies will dig up plenty of dirt about her past, and The Donald will risk looking racist/sexist/slanderous/etc. by coming up with an unflattering rebranding of Oprah's public image ("Opulent Oprah" or some such). Is she shameless enough to endure such mudslinging? Can she risk having her prestige taken down several notches when Trump's minions expose her dirty secrets? Will she finally marry her Stedman? (This article suggests Oprah will neither run for president nor marry her beau.)

In terms of campaign expenditures, Trump spent only about a third of what Hillary spent. Media guy that he is, Trump went straight to low-cost venues like Twitter and YouTube to plead his case to what we now know is a heavily alt-media-using crowd. Trump will lose that advantage, though, if he faces an adversary like Oprah, who is just as adept as Trump is when it comes to image, persuasion, and all that smoke-and-mirrors stuff. Trump essentially re-paradigmed the way electoral campaigns are run, so I think the road has been paved for Oprah to run in 2020. She could easily use Trump's own methods to beat him.

Then again, there's the all-important question of campaign platform. What does Oprah stand for? What specific programs would she initiate? What's her vision of the country's future? If we start seeing answers to these questions over the next year, then we can be fairly sure that Oprah is indeed getting ready to run. If she does, it'll be surpassingly weird to see two media figures barking nonsense at each other during their campaign debates, with nary a career politician in evidence.

Oprah "old white people just need to die" Winfrey.

Take your race-baiting jive and shove it, you insufferable harpy.
