Alec Baldwin shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021 during the making of his cowboy film "Rust" and basically suffered no consequences for the killing. Well, I guess he felt the show must go on because "Rust" has come out—and I had no idea that it had. Here's a funny discussion, with Nerdrotic and friends, about the movie's preview. The movie came out on May 2, 2025 and had a lukewarm reception. Writer-director Joel Souza is on record saying he wishes he'd never written the movie. Charges against Baldwin were eventually dropped, and an involuntary-manslaughter case against him was dismissed in 2024.

*I wonder if my UK readers are familiar with the American slang to rank on, which means "to deride" or "to speak mockingly/derisively of." I'd say that this is slang dating back to the 80s or 90s. I don't know whether Americans even use the expression these days.
Cant say I've ever heard ranking on, nor would I be able to intuit it's meaning.
ReplyDeleteWell, like UK slang, US slang is diverse, often regional, and often associated with certain age groups or generations. Today's youngsters probably don't say "rank on" at all. I remember learning the adjective "ripshit" in 2013 when I moved to Daegu and met a guy from Maine. To me, "ripshit" sounds like something associated with diarrhea, but it's an adjective—New England slang for "pissed off," "furious," etc. "Dad was ripshit when he found out I'd wrecked the car." 'Tis a rich but ephemeral thing, slang is. All the French slang I learned in the 80s is doubtless out of date now.
