January isn't a great month for walking, but if it's not snowy, I want to walk the almost-150K route of the Geumgang bike trail. It's a trail that goes very roughly from southwest to northeast if you walk northeast, starting at the Geumgang Lock Gate (Geumgang gapmun/금강갑문) and the Geumgang Barrage (Geumgang hangutduk/금강하굿둑) in Gunsan City (Seongsan-myeon) and going all the way to the Daecheong-gyo (Daecheong Bridge, which makes me feel right at home since I live right by Daecheong Station) and the Daecheong Dam in Daejeon, Daedeok-gu, Miho-dong (a lot of "dae"s). The official distance is closer to 146 km. I'm still trying to figure out lodging along the way; while I'm willing to camp if I don't find anything convenient, satellite imagery is showing there ought to be plenty of civilization along the way, so I ought to find more than enough motels even if this means going a bit off-piste. Worse comes to worst, I'll just wait until March, but that might mean hiking in occasional rain. Winter tends to be a lot less rainy, but the problem with winter—aside from the cold—is the snow and ice. I have ice cleats, but I've never used them for distance walking, and I'd not sure they could stand the punishment since their frames are made only out of thin rubber. Double-plus ungood for the feeties. Lots to think about; lots to plan.
