thinking out loud about a quiz app

Do You Deserve to Vote?

How's that for a quiz-app title?

I wrote a post in late 2022 in which I posited the creation of hurdles—more than just the showing of ID—for voters to jump over to show they really deserve to vote. Whether such hurdles are constitutional or not (most of my commenters submitted such hurdles are unconstitutional), no less a figure than Thomas Jefferson preferred an educated electorate to an ignorant one. With Jefferson as my impetus, I press on with my idea of hurdles, but in quiz form—specifically, with a quiz name that's meant to be a click-baity challenge designed to goad the potential quiz-taker into finding out whether s/he has the mettle to go to the ballot box and (one hopes) wisely cast an educated vote.

I'm imagining a short quiz in several phases, but I haven't figured out all of the phases yet. Right now, I'm thinking of the following:

1. Do you have a more-than-basic grasp of English?
2. Do you have a more-than-basic education?
3. Can you think logically?
4. How much do you know about civics?
5. Can you pass a basic, stripped-down citizenship test?
6. How much do you know about current politicians' stands on today's major issues?

If your first thought, on seeing the above, is, "Oh, no! But only educated whites can jump all of those hurdles!"—then I submit you're the racist.

  1. I'm ready to take the test when it is ready to be taken. I'm better at civics than commas.
