I think there are a number of factors contributing to unintelligible dialogue. Sound mixing is one, but not the only one. The fact that everyone has a different set-up at home and might not have their audio set up properly is another one. There's also the matter of acting styles. Film and TV acting used to be a lot more "theatrical," with actors projecting, etc. Now, "realistic" acting is in vogue, which means people speaking more like how people speak in real life: mumbling, not projecting, etc. It is definitely a problem, though, and I do often need subtitles.
