Find the latest on the SAVE Act here. Note what the act is designed to do: "This bill requires individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. Specifically, the bill prohibits states from accepting and processing an application to register to vote in a federal election unless the applicant presents documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. The bill specifies what documents are considered acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship, such as identification that complies with the REAL ID Act of 2005 that indicates U.S. citizenship." In other words, this isn't exactly what the people want and have been voting for, which is the requirement to present proof of citizenship on the day of an election. The SAVE Act is about presenting proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Voter registration happens weeks, months, or even years before an election. So at best, the SAVE Act is a mere baby step in the direction of election integrity, and it applies only to federal elections. There's not much there for Democrats to scream about. Between registration and voting, there remains plenty of opportunity for fraud. |
