I have no idea why, but I already have almost 86,000 unique visitors to my blog today. Over the years, I've gone from having an average of 150 daily unique visitors to 350 to 600 to 1000 to several days in a row with over 15,000 unique visits. Right now, I'm currently at 85.5K visitors, which is insane and unheard of. I think it's the bots, and I've read that a blogger should assume that at least 50% of his traffic is always bots. In my case, maybe it's more: if these were all human beings reading my blog, you'd think I'd have way more comments, but I get comments only from the same three or four commenters, again and again. It's baffling. Maybe my bot percentage is closer to 70-80% than to 50% (today, 80% bots would mean over 17,000 human visitors). So I still feel justified in joking about my five faithful readers. My top referring URLs are "Google" and "other." Nothing to be proud of. That said, if my traffic ever gets up to a million per day, that's the time to start shilling my self-published books.
Realistically, though, I'm going to migrate over to Squarespace by the end of July if not sooner, and any traffic will plunge, and it will take years to rebuild my visit count to respectable levels. I'll keep the Blogspot blogs active as a record of my existence (especially my walks), but once I move to Squarespace, that's going to be my main perch.
Watch what happens: tomorrow, I'll have only 600 visitors for the whole day. Exaltation followed by debasement. Story of my life.
