I had a chatterbox of a coworker whom I had to tune out almost every day. Some commonsense rules for face-to-face spoken conversations with your fellow human beings:
- Don't always make it about yourself. Show some interest in your interlocutor.
- Corollary: ask questions. If all you do is talk at your interlocutor, you're an asshole.
- Don't take a million years to build up to your point.
- Corollary: skip all the fucking background information.
- Exercise some nunchi (roughly, commonsense social awareness).
- Have a sense for what's interesting to your interlocutor. Watch for glazed-over eyes, lack of eye contact, mumbled monosyllables or simple utterances like "Yeah" or "Wow" or "Really?" or "That right?" or "Uh-huh." These are signs that the interlocutor is bored and waiting for you to stop. Develop the nunchi to recognize this.
- Don't fucking drone on and on. I've been in so many "conservations" where it's just the other person talking, talking, talking nonstop with no consideration for others and for how real conversations are supposed to work. I am not your goddamn voice recorder.
- Remember that a lecture is not a conversation: it's just you being selfish and never yielding the floor while everyone around must patiently wait and wait for you to finish vainly basking in the sound of your own voice as you marinate in the delusion that you're helpfully dispensing knowledge. News flash: your interlocutor won't remember your lecture in an hour.
- Don't start, then stop, then start over ten fucking times. Organize your thoughts. Sure, an occasional stutter is fine, but when getting through your point becomes a struggle for you, it becomes a struggle for your listeners.
