One of my earliest memories of linguistic differences—aside from noticing US/UK differences in spelling and pronunciation early in life—was when my Korean mom once pronounced the name of Genghis Khan. She said it as Jing-gis Khan (징기스칸), which I later came to understand was the Korean pronunciation, close to the Mongolian. Thus I had my first inkling that not everyone in the world pronounced things the way we do in America. My first step into a larger world, as Kenobi would say.
