Wednesday's food

I had hoped to go down to my building's lobby to cadge a couple salads from our local Paris Baguette (I generally avoid their baguettes, but the salads are... okay). When I got there, there were no salads. The flat, rectangular refrigerated area where they normally stack their plastic quadrilaterals of salad was completely bare, as if all the salads had sold out (which they may have by around 4 p.m.). So I didn't have a real lunch. I did, however, go down to the B1 level to pick up some sugar-free and regular chunky peanut butter (gotta eat the latter in moderation), along with my usual complement of whole milk and heavy cream. Also: my order of Korean-brand Gorgonzola arrived from Coupang today, so I poured a few spoonfuls of that into a bowl and waited for it to thaw. And that was it as far as my Wednesday meal went: some cheese (rather bland) and two or three spoonfuls of chunky peanut butter. My blood sugar was 100 Wednesday morning; I assume the peanut butter is going to shoot that number up when I measure myself tomorrow morning. The carbs are gonna kill me.

Here's something: that Japanese restaurant on the B1 level looks to have gone out of business. I knew it would, but it took longer than predicted—about three years. The guy's food was mediocre at best, so there was no way he was going to sustain that business. The place was (is?) called Mi Mi, a play on two Chinese characters that sound the same in Korean: beautiful (美) and taste (味). Yeah, as I recall, my meal didn't taste that beautiful. I didn't say anything to the guy, but I never went back to his place.

Mi Mi, closed when most restos are serving meals. Been like this for days.

The guy's going to have to come back and clear out. I feel a little bit bad for him, but not very. Wherever he goes next, if he thinks he can get away with serving the same stingily portioned crap, he's going to fail again and again. That's capitalism. Up your game or get buried.

Mi Mi: live fish, sashimi, sushi

I tried adjusting my camera's ISO and shutter speed to capture the aggressively glowing circular sign that says "Mi Mi" in huge letters, but I couldn't photograph the hanja inside the square-looking Korean letter "m"s. This is a thing in Korea: when using hanja (Sino-Korean characters), Koreans often have to explain the hanja parenthetically so the public can get the joke or pun or whatever's being attempted by using hanja, although in this case, the Korean letters (hangeul) are huge while the hanja is tiny (and therefore parenthetical). Chinese itself is a tonal language, but Korean is not, so a lot of similar-sounding characters that would be distinguished by tones in Chinese are not distinguished in Korean. Showing the Chinese characters on the restaurant sign allows Koreans to understand that "Mi Mi" is something like a pun. It's not "beautiful-beautiful" or "tasty-tasty" but "beautiful taste."

Should I starve until the weekend, or should I try for salads again at lunchtime on Thursday? I'm really not sure about walking Thursday night (Wednesday wasn't that great for my chest), so I might be able to afford to eat. Eating and then walking has gotten worse for me ever since I came back from the States, so these days, if I eat, I don't do long walks. So I'm crowd-sourcing my life-decisions to you, O My Readers. Tell me what to do.

In other news: Wednesday turned out to be a nothing sort of day. I got up late, farted around, didn't write up any new material for Substack, and didn't do my exercises until late evening. I'm going to rewatch "Mission: Impossible" to see whether I can make sense of a few things, then I'll write a review later this week or over the weekend.

  1. If it were me, I'd eat. But that's me, of course. Eating doesn't affect my walking. Since you have to choose, I'd vote for eating and giving the heart a few days rest.

  2. I think you should get a horse-sized bowl of kale and go to town.

    Also, Paris Baguette had a brand-wide sale yesterday--that's why everything was sold out. I know this because I stopped by the PB on campus yesterday afternoon to pick up a little snack and they had absolutely nothing (I think they had four cookies left... I grabbed one). I asked the woman at the register what was up, and that's when I learned about the sale.
