the long, lonely road

To think that, before my health crises, I'd have had the arrogance to consider walking part or all of this route (with proper planning of course). Amazing what a few years—plus a couple of medical disasters—can do to your pride.

I guess my one worry, should I try to walk this desolate route, would be that I might encounter a shiny demon who demands that I play him the best song in the world. Oh, and there's that whole dehydration-starvation-exposure-skin cancer thing. That's worrisome, too.

  1. I've never heard of this route until today. And I'm not even sure how you would make the walk without a considerable support staff with vehicles and supplies. I'm sure it could be done with enough planning and money, but it seems like a huge endeavor.

  2. Save it for the El Camino trail. I'm looking forward (vicariously) to that one.

  3. There is a guy who chronicled walking a desert route in Nevada. An interesting read. He buried various caches along the way, but still cranked out serious mileage day after day to reach them. IIRC, cowboy camped the whole way. As much as I enjoy hiking, that (or the video you link to) hold no appeal for me.

  4. Not sure why you would want to walk that in the first place, except maybe for the solitude. It sounds like the scenery would grow monotonous rather quickly. Also, it's Australia, so everything would likely be trying to kill you.
