The days can still be hot even this far into September, but the nights are starting to cool down, and yesterday's all-day rain brought a measure of not-unpleasant coolness with it, along with great air quality today. By the end of the month, average daytime temps will be a few degrees cooler than they were during the high point of summer. September is Korea's last summer month, but it's also the harbinger of fall weather and temperature.
For the purposes of my upcoming, later-than-usual walk, I looked ahead at possible temperatures starting in mid-October, and the Seoul region will be in the mid-60s (18ºC, give or take a couple of degrees) during the day, and in the high 40s (8.3ºC or so) at night, which means every morning of the walk down to Busan (start time: about 5:30 a.m. when it's dark at that time of year) will be starting off cold enough for me to wear a jacket until the sun wakes up and takes over. Mid-60s means short-sleeve weather for me; this ought to be a very pleasant time of year to hike, but if it rains, it's going to be shitty. I hate a cold rain.
Looking back, I thought August was a bit weird this year. We had some strings of days that were a proper heat wave, but we also had some unwontedly cool days with low humidity. I'm sure some wild-eyed person out there is shouting about climate change! Maybe that's what it is. Then again, maybe not.
The biggest source of "man-made climate catastrophe" isn't coal; it's misgovernment, war and central planning gone wrong. Grain disruptions in Ukraine, deforestation in Haiti, flooding in Libya are fundamentally no different from ruining your car by racing it without engine oil.
