Trivia: the yearly summer heat wave in Europe is called la canicule in French. If you see the Latin root for "dog" (canis; think: canine), you're not seeing things. This is a Gallic reference to the "dog days" of summer, an ancient idea. Back around 2003, France lost almost 15,000 citizens to la canicule that year—many of them old, many others hospitalized. Like many Europeans, the French don't believe in air conditioning, which means you're fucked if you're either a senior citizen or a hospital patient. How about fans, at least, right?
