noods by Andy

I know how much my buddy Charles loves to hear the term noods (short for "noodles" in culinary slang). Here's Chef Andy, down in Oz, talking about three noodle dishes:

What's up with Andy's porn 'stache? It's a thing he does for charity every November.

  1. It's nice having pet peeves like that, though. It gives me a very easy way to decide who I am and am not going to watch.

  2. A shame you might not want to watch Andy. He's universally liked for being unpretentious and for respecting the cultures of the dishes he tries to cook. He doesn't always succeed, which means he will often try again in a later video. It's rare for him to say something like "but I'm putting my own spin on this," which is something a lot of YouTube cooks/chefs say right before they (seemingly deliberately) bungle a dish. My impression of Andy is that he's an explorer who's always willing to learn. He's done a few Korean dishes passably well.

  3. Well, to be honest, I'm not really a fan of most YouTube cooks/chefs. It's just not a style of video I generally enjoy watching, regardless of who is behind the camera. I don't know why that is so, since I do enjoy cooking, as you know. Just one of my idiosyncracies, I guess.

(I also absolutely hate watching videos to learn how to cook something. Just give me the stinking recipe and I'll figure it out myself.)

And I thought I was a grouchy old man!

    Who's over fifty, right?

  5. Well, technically I am not over fifty....

  6. Yes, if you go by the digits 5 and 0, then you're technically 50, and you'll remain 50 for a year.

But if you go by your actual age, then on the day you turned 50, the number 50 affirmed that you've already lived for fifty years, and every day beyond that counts as "over 50." (Then you'll turn 51, meaning you'll have lived for 51 years.)

So as Kenobi might have said, you're either 50 or over 50 from a certain point of view.

  7. Oh, I am fully aware of the semantics. But I have four months and change left when I can say "I'm fifty," and you'd better believe I'm going to milk that for all it's worth.

  8. Ah. Coulda' sworn you turned 50 earlier this year. I need to write your birth year down in my calendar or something. 1974, then?

  9. No, you have it right. What I meant was "there are four months and change left during which I can say that I'm fifty." In retrospect, the wording was a little awkward.

Obviously I have still not adopted the practice of reading over commments before I post them.

And boy have we derailed a post ostensibly about noodles.
