Pope Francis has died at the age of 88 after a long respiratory illness. Soon, there will be a conclave and the announcement of Habemus papam! as the Vatican selects a new pope. I had initially thought that this pope, being somewhat theologically liberal, not to mention a Jesuit (but I repeat myself), might be a welcome change from the doctrinaire likes of Pope Benedict (a.k.a. Joseph Ratzinger), but Francis (a.k.a, Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina) proved to be a stereotypical Latin socialist in many respects. I would say he has a mixed record at best, and already, the jokes are coming out that the Church needs a Catholic to succeed this time. I hesitantly agree. RIP all the same.
