tragedy on the East River

This is just silly, and so far, it doesn't seem to have resulted in any deaths, thank goodness (at least as of this writing), but You may have heard that a tall ship from the Mexican Navy was making its way out of a New York City harbor on its way to Iceland when the antiquated ship's masts got caught on the Brooklyn Bridge. Video shows the ship moving at a slow, deliberate, stately pace while drifting backward, so the working theory is that the vessel somehow lost the ability to steer itself and/or lost power (if a modern power supply had been installed on the ship*). The incident will be, I hope, no more than an embarrassment, something to be swept aside in time. If people have died as a result of the "crash" (the ship didn't really crash into the bridge: it ran completely under it but was too tall for its tallest masts to pass under; the masts were knocked down while crew members were in the ship's rigging), there will have to be investigations, and this won't be a laughing matter.

__________

*Which it had, based on the ship's electric lights. I'm guessing there were at least two power sources since the ship's festive lights were still lit when the ship ran under the bridge. Or maybe, if there was power to the ship's motor, there had been a mechanical failure.

UPDATE: sober up. They're saying at least two people are dead. There was a crew complement of 277 souls, with 2 dead and 17 injured as of this linked article's publication.
