I guess I should say "Thank goodness for AI" because Google's AI just told me something I could have figured out long ago had I not been an idiot: my Samsung Galaxy S21 cell phone has a "pro mode" on the camera that allows you to adjust your exposure settings manually: ISO and shutter speed at least, not f-stop. You can also adjust your white balance (your camera's notion of what counts as "true white" in your photo, to make lighting more natural). So now, I'm like a kid in a candy store, eager to try out this new information tonight along with the moon pics I take with my Canon.
Whenever I do my next long walk (probably this coming fall), I doubt I'll be taking the Canon along with me, but I'll definitely be using the cell-phone camera's "pro" settings when I do my nighttime and night-sky photography. There ought to be some major improvements in photo quality based on the adjustments I make. Stay tuned for Part 2 of my photo odyssey either tonight or sometime tomorrow.
Knowledge is power.
