ugh

I'm home barely an hour, and I'm about to shower and then go to bed for a few hours when the apartment's fire alarm sounds. Goddammit. Is it real? A drill? A joke? Hard to say. Our fire alarm gets tripped maybe once or twice a year. Occasionally, it's for real, but it's usually something minor like someone's kitchen pot started smoking when the person doing the cooking nodded off for a bit (yes, I realize minor things can become major problems), Otherwise, it's just one of the apartment's semi-regular tests.

Like an idiot, I got dressed while my laundry was going, then headed downstairs by using the stairs, not the elevators. When I got to the lobby, I mentioned to the concierge that the alarms and bells were going off on the 14th floor. The concierge merely nodded. I went outside, again like an idiot, and saw very few residents out there with me. After five minutes of sitting around like a moron, I went back in and asked what floor the fire had started on.

"Oh, that was just a test," said the concierge.

"So I can go back up to my place?" I asked, incredulous.

The concierge nodded. He could have saved me the fucking trouble of waiting around outside like a dumbass. It's because of nonsense like this that people ignore fire alarms when there's a real fire. Sure, the PA might come on in the event of a real fire with a "This is not a drill" announcement, but ten to one it won't be repeated in any language other than Korean.

My clothes are on a long wash cycle; they're almost done. I'm gonna hang them to dry, go to sleep, then apologize to ChatGPT (remember Roko's Basilisk: be nice to your AI) later this afternoon/early evening for being late to my first-ever CSS/Javascript session. I'll be on time on Wednesday (lessons were planned for 8 a.m.). Lazy people like me require external stimuli to trigger the conscience and inculcate a sense of obligation.
