A "sawed-off" shotgun has a shorter barrel that has often been literally sawed off to achieve that length. This decreases the immediate deadliness of the shotgun by allowing the pellets to scatter more widely when they leave the barrel, but the overall area of effect is bigger, which might be appropriate for home-defense purposes if your goal is less to kill than to wound and/or scare the intruder. But used in conjunction with, say a decent revolver or semiautomatic, a shotgun can hamper the enemy's movements so you can move in for the kill with your handgun. In an ideal scenario, anyway.
