I admit that I sometimes like watching walking-tour videos of these unreal, super-rich properties, but I agree that these excessive spaces deserve to be roundly mocked. I've thought long and hard about whether I'd ever want to live in such a space, and honestly, I don't. Just thinking about the maintenance is enough to make me tired. Mowing the lawn of my family's tiny, half-acre plot in northern Virginia was a chore when I was a teen, so why would I burden myself with the daily task of cleaning a giant home and all of that real estate? Oh, just hire help, you say?! And how the hell much is that gonna cost me? No... such homes are nice to visit, like visiting a museum, but I'd never want to be burdened by such a place. And at the end of your life—since most of us end up dying in hospitals—you have to ask yourself what the point of having such a home is if you can't even comfortably die in it.

I don't have to think long and hard about it--there is no way I would ever want to live in a McMansion like that. HJ agrees, as neither of us would want to be tasked with cleaning and maintenance. We've actually talked about what we would want in a house if we ever got one (and I mean an actual stand-alone house), and I think we'd be able to fit everything we need into a hundred square meters. That would be considered tiny by American standards, of course.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was much younger, I used to have fantasies of being an architect and designing huge, palatial homes. Kids, right? Some lingering bit of feeling from that era is probably what motivates me to watch these obnoxious, rich-property videos. I wouldn't mind staying in such a place for a week or so, as long as I didn't have to do any maintenance work while there.
DeleteI can't say I watch too many rich-property videos, but I do watch the equally snobbish videos from Architectural Digest, etc. I have a thing for really well-designed houses as opposed to big houses. But I guess I also have a thing for really small houses, as I watch tiny house channels and channels like Never Too Small. The latter I watch 50% for nifty design ideas and 50% for the comments saying, "25 sqm isn't small! I live in a 10 sqm closet!"
DeleteAnd now I will admit that I have a file with all of my ideas for things I want to incorporate into a house someday. Probably all fantasy, but one can dream.
I've seen quite a few tiny-house vids as well, and part of me is drawn to them, too, mainly because of their appealing simplicity. If I had a tiny house in a remote place, I might be happy in my isolation. People could find my mouldering corpse later. Follow the smell.
