for my Tolkien nerds

  1. I remember you posted another video from this guy a while back, and I was conflicted then. On the one hand, it's cool to see someone experiencing Tolkien for the first time... but on the other hand, he does seem to get excited over things that are very obvious to me. I don't remember what the previous video was about, but in this one at least he makes a pretty good point, even if it is one that is obvious to all Tolkien nerds. I do think the difference in media (book versus film) plays a part as well--I don't think you could structure the films the same way that the books were structured and expect them to work. It's not a matter of one being better structured than the other. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

I do wonder about one thing, though: That video you posted previously was quite some time ago, but he's still not finished the books? I guess he's really been taking his time.

Anyway, my curmudgeonly harumphing aside, it is good to see new people coming to appreciate Tolkien even now.

    1. This is a guy who randomly appears on my feed through the whims of the algorithm, so I have no clue who he is, what he does, or how long he's taking to slog through Tolkien, nor have I even checked the release dates of his videos.

I can say that, at some point, I'd like to get around to rereading Tolkien myself. And I recall starting The Silmarillion years ago, but I don't think I ever got past the creation story, which is, amusingly, structured like a rap battle or a hip-hip dance-off, with cosmic powers singing in alternation, harmoniously and discordantly.

Switching gears: It's kind of a fine line between "Hooray! A new Tolkien lover!" and "As a Tolkien veteran, I spit on the newbie's face!"
