My buddy Mike would be proud of me. I'm not normally a huge fan of history. In fact, when I was a teen, I used to hate the subject: a bunch of dates and events that never seemed to gel together into a coherent narrative. Boring. I've long since come to realize the error of my previous way of thinking, but that doesn't mean I suddenly find history captivating: It's still not something I eagerly reach out for. With that in mind, Mike would be happy to know I'm currently watching the three-episode 2017 miniseries "Gunpowder," about the infamous and failed "Gunpowder Plot" (1604-1605) to assassinate King James. And while that's going on, I'm also reading Candace Millard's Destiny of the Republic, the book on which the miniseries "Death by Lightning" was based. I'll have something to say about both of these things over the coming weeks while we all wait for the weather to begin warming up.
