And to head off remarks from my more left-leaning readers: yes, I'm sure Trump and his administration will do its own gaslighting as well. Has Trump ever admitted to being wrong about Operation Warp Speed, given how universally the righties rejected the vaxx? Has he ever truly faced criticism of his inaction vis-à-vis the national debt (which, frankly, makes him no different from any other president)? Doubtful, and I doubt he ever will. But this doesn't mean I accept a moral equivalence. The point of the tweet below makes that clear: the entire media-industrial complex did what it could to hide Biden's screamingly obvious decline from the willing believers, at least until the decline was too obvious and Biden was no longer useful—the same complex that constantly painted Trump and his sympathizers in a bad light. Has it always been this way, with the left so morally decrepit and the right so relatively upright (cough)? No. All you have to do is look back to the Dubya/neocon era to see how bad things could get on the right, up to and including a misguided war with Iraq. So for the moment, the right stands above the left. But that can change. If you want to see things in terms of cycles and equivalencies, zoom back to a more abstract level and think in longer spans of time. As the proverb goes: sae ong ji ma. It's never a matter of eternal equipoise.

And the lies once told, live on and are repeated even after they've been exposed and debunked. I have a lefty friend in the UK who left this comment on a pro-Trump meme I posted on Facebook:
ReplyDelete"shrink the government by banning books, banning talk of transgender issues, banning abortion, introducing nationwide tariffs? Guarantee free speech by banning books and the use of certain words! Either I've got it wrong and none of this is happening and my own eyes are lying to me, or you dont know about this stuff, or you do know and just ignore. Either way, you guys won and that's fine, but don't force us to have to agree with your views and take them as read, that's not very liberal of you at all."
It's scary that the indoctrination and lies span the oceans.
People in the UK have no right to talk, given everything Orwellian that's been happening there over the past many years. Is this person British or just a brainwashed expat living in the UK? UK citizens in small towns have to endure unassimilated, predatory migrants being dumped on them. The most common baby name in the UK is currently Muhammad. The UK has turned into the very nightmarish surveillance state that Orwell warned about, and the Parliament's Labour and Tories seem just to be variants of each other's politically correct Marxism. The NHS is a shambles, with long waits for treatment (just like in Canada), and violence is increasingly a problem as the demographic pressure of the "migrants" increases. Maybe clean up your own mess first before criticizing America.
DeleteIt's also hilarious to hear accusations of free-speech repression from a country that arrests old ladies merely praying in front of abortion clinics or people who state the obvious online about the migrant situation.
banning books: you mean banning pornographic books from children's school libraries? Please cite the non-pornographic or non-grooming-oriented books that were "banned," and explain why keeping those books in kids' schools is wholesome. I want to hear the full extent of your perversion.
banning talk of transgender issues: I'm not even sure what this means. Cite a specific example of banning talk—and I mean a ban that comes from the federal government.
banning abortion: There is no federal ban on abortion—it's now state by state, so if you have a problem with a specific state, take it up with that entity. And if a person has a uterus and is a resident of a state with an abortion ban, she can cross a border and get her abortion there. Easy peasy.
tariffs: You obviously still don't understand Trump despite having had four years to observe and learn. For Trump, tariffs are a negotiating tool to be used as leverage. If a tariff sticks, it's only because the other country is being intransigent. Mexico and Canada are both reporting that Trump has either delayed or canceled planned tariffs against them. This is now how the game is played. Whine all you want.
Great response! Yeah, I'm stealing some of these points to throw back at him. He is a British citizen born and raised. Obviously, he has no understanding of how our system of government works. All those porno book bans happened at the local level, not from the feds. Of course, his ancestors didn't have a clue either, which is why that thing happened back in 1776.
ReplyDeleteWell, before you do any throwing, let me repeat the comment, but with links attached so he can't say, "Lies! This isn't happening in the UK!" At worst, he'll say, "Oh, that's from the rightie Daily Mail, which isn't as truthful as The Guardian!" (snicker)

banning books: you mean banning pornographic and other explicit books from children's school libraries? Please cite the non-pornographic or non-grooming-oriented books that were "banned," and explain why keeping explicit books in kids' schools is wholesome. I want to hear the full extent of your perversion.
banning talk of transgender issues: I'm not even sure what this means. Cite a specific example of banning talk—and I mean a ban that comes from the federal government. What Trump and his administration want to do is ban not talk but practices related to trans people. He wants to limit or eliminate their role in the military and eliminate "special care" for them; he and his administration want to
