From here, regarding the "Hur tapes" of Biden:
Listening to these newly released tapes, it’s clear exactly why Biden and the Democrats were so desperate to keep them from coming out.
What's the problem?

I'm not sure it counts as an error, but I'd word it exactly clear...
ReplyDeleteThe error is a dangling modifier. According to the sentence, who is listening to the tapes? Some mysterious "it," which makes no sense. Possible rewrite:
DeleteListening to these newly released tapes, we can see exactly why Biden and the Democrats were so desperate to keep them from coming out.
And for the smartass idiots who will say that "see" is the wrong verb for someone who's listening, another possible rewrite:
DeleteListening to these newly released tapes, we can understand exactly why Biden and the Democrats were so desperate to keep them from coming out.
Of course, in the original rewrite, "see" means "understand," which should be obvious to anyone but an idiot.
Good to know, not that I'll remember. Your versions read better, I see and understand that.
ReplyDeleteWhether you remember is based on whether you expend the effort to remember. If you've lazily decided not to remember, then you won't remember. We retain things if we think they're important. Attitude affects learning.
DeleteI'll try to remember that! But seriously, my ability to retain even simple things like names is slip-sliding away. When it comes to grammar, I've already forgotten more than I ever knew...
DeleteYour versions read better, I see and understand that.
DeleteAch! What's the punctuation problem, and why?
