ReplyDeleteSays the pedestrian who clearly seems to be standing in the bike lane to take his photo! Have you ever actually had a close call, or is it just a visceral reaction like we might have when we see a motorbike on the pavement or a car going the wrong way down a one way street?
I must confess I occasionally stray into the pedestrian lane:
1. To avoid puddles, potholes, snakes, ridges etc. on the bike path.
2. To cycle two abreast without taking up too much space on the bike path.
3. To undertake if someone's coming in the opposite direction and I don't have space.
4. To give wobbly kids an extra wide birth.
However, I don't do so if there are actually pedestrians anywhere nearby.
I could also regale you with numerous stories of pedestrians:
1. Walking several abreast on the clearly marked bike path.
2. Crossing the bike path without checking to see if anyone's coming.
3. Letting their dogs, children, balls stray out into the bike path.
4. Striding out into the bike path to get a better angle for their cherry blossom etc. selfie,
I don't know whether it's worse that bikers do it deliberately, or that pedestrians are completely oblivious (until they get hit through their own fault and claim millions in compensation).
You'll notice that there was nobody else in that photo. As for walkers being equally obnoxious: your tu quoque fallacy aside, I readily grant that those walkers are just as bad as the many bikers I encounter who bumble into my lane for no good reason whatsoever. But walkers weren't my focus when I made my remark, and I'm under no obligation to engage in both-sides-ism every time I make an accusation. That said, I can understand veering to avoid puddles, but side-by-side travel by either bikers or walkers, when others are around, is just plain rude. I guess you haven't seen my rants about walkers who walk several abreast or fail to follow the 우측보행 rule.

ReplyDeleteHalf an hour ago, I was in THE PEDESTRIAN LANE when I saw a group of four runners IN THE BIKE LANE. So yes, a curse upon them all. May they come down with ball cancer.
