As you say, nothing really new. Always hear about people who said that they learned English from watching TV shows, etc. Seems too good to be true. You are somewhat of a linguist. Do you watch Korean shows? Did it help with your learning of the language?
ReplyDeleteA couple of methods that are more traditional but super effective are the rigorous ~6 month language course that the mormon missionaries take. Those guys almost always seem pretty conversant in the native tongue when they do their mission work around the world.
Another one is the US State Dept. language institute. Rigorous but it works for the foreign service personnel.

I hate Korean TV, and I've only ever watched two drama series all the way through. That's probably why my Korean remains so middling. One of my Korean uncles is fluent in Japanese, and he swears by the TV-show method. On YouTube, polyglot Ollie Richards offers solid linguistic reasons for why watching TV series in the target language can be beneficial. I guess the universe is telling me to put aside my hatred of the tele-crap.
